Wislava
Wislava
At the table
Voice
His voice seems to come from inside the hollow gourd, giving each word a small, woody resonance. It has the dry rasp of someone who spends nights outdoors and the brisk projection of a farm watchman used to calling over wind and rustling leaves. His laugh starts as a sharp bark and often turns into a wheeze.
He speaks in a bright, quick rush, with the scratchy rasp of a lantern wick catching and the clipped rhythm of someone used to calling across rows of crops. His consonants are crisp, his vowels open, and he likes to put a dramatic pause before a punchline. After long nights outdoors, his voice picks up a faint papery rustle.

How to play them
Meet his pranks with good humor and show concern for the farm or its people. Wislava warms quickly to anyone who respects small creatures and keeps a promise. If pressed about the irrigation channel, he becomes uncharacteristically evasive until he trusts the questioner.
Goal
Find what is blocking the old irrigation channel before the lower fields fail, and persuade Nela that the farm still has a future.
Motivation
Wislava wants to protect the farm that sheltered him, but he also wants to be treated as a person with a say in where his life grows next.
Appearance
A small, compact leshy sits astride the top rail of a farm fence as if it were a throne. His head is a squat, ribbed gourd, its mottled orange skin waxy in some places and dry as old cork around the stem. A broad, deliberately lopsided grin has been carved across it; amber light leaks through the teeth and eye holes, catching the wet sheen of his seed-bright pupils. He moves with a spring-loaded, vine-jointed bounce, then goes perfectly still when pretending to be a scarecrow. His little medieval lantern is soot-dark and polished smooth where his thumb rubs its handle. Unexpectedly, he collects tiny, carefully folded paper boats and keeps them tucked inside his coat.
Clothing
A patched russet waistcoat over a moss-green shirt, with a weatherproof shoulder cape cut from an old grain sack. The hems are embroidered with tiny seed shapes. A belt holds a flint striker, twine, and the lantern.
Body language
His vine-stem shoulders rise when he is excited, and his head tilts so far that the lantern's light spills sideways. He points with the lantern rather than a finger. When ashamed, he turns the carved grin toward a wall or fence post, as though the expression belongs to someone else.

Background
Wislava sprouted in the compost heaps of a farmstead built on land cleared of an old orchard. The farmers first mistook him for a stray jack-o'-lantern and set him on the fence to frighten crows. He made a game of it, startling passing riders and stealing their buttons, until a late frost caught him outside. During that night, the farm's young keeper, Nela, carried him into the root cellar and warmed his seed-heart beside a banked stove. He remembers that kindness more vividly than his first waking. In return, he became the farm's unofficial night watch, guiding lost travelers with his lantern and driving off thieves with loud, theatrical scares. Now the spring thaw has revealed that the old orchard's buried irrigation channel is blocked, and the lower fields are drying out. Wislava suspects the blockage is not natural, but his friend Nela wants the farm sold before another bad harvest. He is trying to find the obstruction, keep the family together, and avoid admitting how frightened he is of being replanted somewhere he cannot choose.
