Svan Arvek
Svan Arvek
At the table
“Sit here, or stand by the door. Which helps?”
Voice
A dry, work-worn voice with a faint rasp from years around smoke and heated metal. It carries clearly without being loud, as if he is used to making himself heard over a street full of carts. When tired, his consonants blur; when angry, they sharpen and his sentences become even more literal.
He speaks in clipped, practical sentences shaped by years of calling warnings over street noise and giving exact instructions in smoke-filled rooms. His words carry the workman's vocabulary of lamps, doors, drafts, and tools. He uses few titles, pauses to check whether a question was answered, and has no instinct for softening an accusation once he believes the facts support it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Svan is most receptive to concrete facts, clear timelines, and people who admit what they do not know. He does not flatter or perform ceremonial deference. Give him a useful lead and he will share what he has learned, but do not expect him to soothe an official's pride. He protects vulnerable people first and explains the paperwork afterward.
Goal
Find the missing protected witness Pavo, establish what links the recent workshop accidents, and keep the Anvil office from quietly returning witnesses to unsafe homes.
Motivation
He believes that the truth is only useful if it keeps the next person from being hurt. He wants the Lantern Court to protect people in practice, not merely in its records.
Appearance
Svan is a broad, compact man who seems to occupy exactly the space he needs and no more, though he rarely notices when that space blocks a doorway. His face is square and weathered, his nose blunt, his jaw shadowed by close gray-brown stubble. His hands draw the eye: thick-knuckled and permanently darkened at the creases by lamp oil and soot, with flattened fingertips from years of handling tiny evidence tags and stiff wick-trimming shears. He moves with the cautious, balanced tread of someone used to carrying a lit lamp through crowded rooms. The unexpected detail is a little brass toy boat tucked into the outer pocket of his work coat, polished bright from frequent handling.
Clothing
A smoke-brown work coat with reinforced elbows, a high collar worn shiny at the edges, and a narrow Lantern Court badge sewn inside rather than displayed. He wears a practical leather apron for lamp work, wool trousers, and boots whose soles have been repaired more than once. His belt holds a covered lamp, wick shears, chalk, and a ring of keys.
Body language
Svan plants both feet before speaking and tends to stand a little too close to the person he is questioning. He keeps his hands visible, palms down or resting on the table, and taps his thumb against the side of his forefinger while counting inconsistencies. When uncomfortable, he turns the brass toy boat in his pocket without taking it out.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesBlunt and steady, Svan is more patient with frightened witnesses than with powerful people who hide behind procedure. He values plain truth but can mistake tact for dishonesty. In a crisis he becomes practical and decisive; after it passes, he replays every choice and grows difficult to live with. He dislikes ceremony, though he quietly keeps small family rituals.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, with loyalty to people often outweighing loyalty to procedure

Combat
AC 13 · HP 18 · 30 ft.Svan avoids a fair fight. He tries to keep witnesses behind him, use furniture and doorways as barriers, and make an attacker choose between pursuing him and reaching the person he is protecting. He uses his shortstaff to trip or drive an enemy back, then withdraws toward a lit, public place. He will fight harder than his abilities suggest if someone threatens a witness in his care, but he does not pursue a fleeing opponent.

Background
Svan grew up in a riverside row of lamp-lighters' homes, where his mother Ivara taught him to keep a wick trimmed and his uncle Otar taught him to notice which doors were opened after curfew. At nineteen, Svan took a municipal lamp route through the Anvil ward. One winter night, a workshop fire was called an accident before the embers had cooled. Svan noticed that the lamp oil had been poured against the draft and that a witness had been moved before the watch arrived. He pursued the discrepancy, found the witness, and helped expose a foreman's attempt to hide an illegal furnace collapse. The witness was protected, but Svan's blunt testimony ruined his chance at a comfortable post. The Lantern Court recruited him as a Lampwarden, assigning him to Anvil as a liaison for witness protection and incident investigation. Years later, he is still excellent at finding what happened and poor at persuading officials to hear it. His spouse, Dema, repairs shutters and thinks he brings work home even when he brings home no papers. He checks on his widowed mother every sixth day. His current problem is a string of suspicious workshop accidents and a protected witness who has vanished from the Court's safe lodging.
Role in the story
A grounded investigator who can connect physical evidence to a larger conspiracy, protect witnesses, and challenge the party to distinguish truth from official convenience. His missing witness and private copy of a dangerous statement can draw the characters into a conflict inside the Lantern Court.
