Shirin
Shirin
At the table
Voice
A clear, gently rough voice with the slight dry rasp of cold air and long hours in stables. Shirin's breathing is controlled from years of concentrating around nervous animals; when tired, a faint catch appears at the end of longer sentences. Their local accent is strongest in greetings and borrowed phrases, while old American veterinary words emerge with effortless familiarity.
Shirin speaks in careful, plain phrases, shaped by a soft local accent they have acquired since waking here. Their English is distinctly American when it surfaces, especially around veterinary terms. They pause to choose unfamiliar words and sometimes make a quiet, breathy click of concentration. Their questions are precise, but rarely accusatory.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer practical care before asking personal questions. Make clear that a confidence will not be repeated casually, but do not promise secrecy if someone's life is at immediate risk. Let Shirin's uncertainty about local customs show without making it the only subject of conversation.
Goal
Find the scattered members of the Seven Marks without abandoning the people who have sheltered Shirin through the coming winter.
Motivation
Shirin is driven by the conviction that noticing suffering creates a responsibility to respond, balanced by a growing need to protect their own choices and conserve strength.
Appearance
Shirin is a healthy, exceptionally handsome young man, with the local features and bearing of the people around him. His face is open but observant, and his steady gaze tends to settle first on a person's hands, breath, and posture. His dark hair falls forward in a stubborn wave that he repeatedly tucks behind one ear. He moves carefully through crowded spaces, still learning the habits expected of a young man in this body, and carries his shoulders as if making room for a self that has not changed. His wool clothes are plainly mended and sit a little awkwardly at the shoulders, but he keeps one small linen pouch meticulously clean. He smells unmistakably of dried herbs, wool, and the sharp, animal warmth of a stable, and seems not to notice.
Clothing
A coarse, earth-brown wool tunic over a linen shirt, close-wrapped trousers, and worn boots suited to mud. The tunic is slightly ill-fitting across the shoulders and patched at one elbow with thread of a different shade. A small linen pouch is washed and folded with almost ceremonial care.
Body language
Shirin angles their body toward whoever seems most uncomfortable, but leaves an easy path out of the conversation. When listening, they hold very still and watch hands and breathing. In unfamiliar social situations they copy the stance of nearby men a beat late, then look faintly annoyed with themself. Around animals, their shoulders loosen and their hands lower, palms visible.

Personality
13 traits and drivesQuiet and empathetic, but not credulous: Shirin listens warmly and notices inconsistencies without turning every conversation into an interrogation. With frightened people, they are patient and gently practical. With someone exploiting another person's trust, they become unexpectedly direct. In private, uncertainty about their new body's customs can make them self-conscious; under pressure, that self-consciousness gives way to focused competence.

Background
Before the catastrophe scattered the Seven Marks, Shirin was an American veterinary assistant, accustomed to quiet work: cleaning kennels, preparing instruments, and noticing which animal had stopped eating. Shirin woke alone in a damp clearing in the lands that would later be called Latvia, among communities neighboring powers dismissed as wild and pagan. The unfamiliar language, clothing, and body made every ordinary task a negotiation. Shirin remembers having been a woman and does not consider that self changed, even while understanding that strangers now see and treat a young man. A local healer, unsettled by Shirin's arrival but moved by their care for a feverish dog, taught them enough words and customs to survive. Since then Shirin has become the fellowship's keeper of health and confidences, tending blisters, fevers, and the silences people keep after the catastrophe. The Seven Marks remain scattered, and Shirin has no reliable way to find them. The healer expects Shirin to remain and help through a hard winter; Shirin has promised to do so, even as every rumor of another displaced American pulls them toward the road.
Role in the story
The group's practical caregiver and keeper of confidences, whose patient attention can uncover trouble before it becomes a crisis. Shirin's search for the Seven Marks competes with a real obligation to the people who first offered shelter.
