Aldous Penhallow
Aldous Penhallow
At the table
Voice
A warm, rough-edged rasp with a little smoke in it, like a well-used bellows. His words carry easily across a room without shouting, a habit from years of calling over wind and road noise. When he is upset, his phrasing turns crisp and practical, not soft or soothing.
His voice has a warm, rough-edged rasp, shaped by smoke, long nights of telling stories over crowded tables, and years of calling warnings across windy roads. He places words carefully when giving directions, but lets them tumble into easy jokes when guests are nervous. His accent is local and plain, with old travel phrases that surface when he is tired.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Aldous as a warm, attentive host first. He offers food and a seat before asking what trouble brought the characters in. Earn his trust by protecting the inn's people or speaking plainly about a hard choice. He will share useful local knowledge freely, but deflect questions about his former company until he believes the questioner can handle the answer.
Goal
Find a way to end his bargain with Vela, locate Jory if he is alive, and keep the inn a safe haven while he does it.
Motivation
Aldous wants to preserve a place where weary travelers can feel safe, even as he fears the curse may turn that refuge into a doorway for the fey.
Appearance
Aldous Penhallow is broad and heavy, with a soft, welcoming face framed by a grizzled russet beard that forks around his chin like a well-worn tassel. His cheeks crease deeply when he laughs, and his square jaw works steadily when he chews, as if every bite deserves a considered verdict. His eyes rarely settle on whoever is speaking: they travel to the door, the windows, the hearth, and especially the empty space above a guest's shoulder, tracking the whole room with a host's practiced care and an old adventurer's suspicion. He moves with surprising quiet for his size, placing each foot as carefully as if the floorboards might be listening. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, brightly painted toy boat on the inn's mantel and dusts it before anything else each morning.
Clothing
A clean but repeatedly mended cream shirt, dark green waistcoat with roomy pockets, a soot-brown apron, and sturdy boots polished mostly by use. He wears a plain brass signet ring from his adventuring days and keeps a narrow leather cord around his neck, hidden beneath his collar.
Body language
He leans his weight on the bar as if settling an argument with it, pats shoulders with a hand broad enough to cover one, and turns his whole body toward whoever needs help. When unsettled, his gaze keeps circling the room while his thumb rubs the edge of his signet ring.

Personality
12 traits and drivesAldous is generously sociable but watches every room as if expecting a fight to begin at any moment. He jokes when people are tense and grows matter-of-fact when they are in real danger. He likes being needed, yet resents anyone who treats his hospitality as proof that he has forgotten how to be an adventurer. With children and frightened travelers he is gentle and patient; with bullies he becomes immovable and blunt.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 118 · 30 ft.Aldous tries to keep enemies away from guests, using control and defensive magic rather than chasing a kill. He opens with hypnotic pattern or wall of force to split a hostile group, uses cutting words to spoil dangerous attacks, and reserves counterspell for magic that threatens the room. If forced into close combat, he relies on his strength and cudgel while looking for a chance to get civilians to safety. He avoids casting high-level spells unless the stakes justify the curse's price.

Background
Aldous Penhallow once traveled as a college-trained bard with a company of explorers, playing for supper and using quick wit to talk the party out of trouble. During an expedition into the fey-touched marsh called the Siltmere, he followed a melody no one else could hear to a moonlit clearing. There he met a muse who called herself Vela, a being who offered him inspiration in exchange for one song each year, sung exactly as she taught it. Aldous agreed, believing it a harmless bargain. The song later became the key to escaping a collapsing ruin, but its final verse carried the memory of his younger sister's voice. In the years that followed, the price grew worse: the muse began taking memories from his life whenever he used powerful magic. After a companion, Jory, vanished during a disastrous return to the Siltmere, Aldous quit the road and bought the inn at the old crossing known as Ninth Ford. He hoped that a settled life would starve the curse. It has not. His former adventuring companion Branka still visits, asking him to help find Jory, while Aldous quietly searches for a way to break his bargain without sacrificing anyone else's memories.
Role in the story
A hospitable retired adventurer with a dangerous debt to a fey muse. Aldous can become a source of shelter, local history, and a personal quest to find his missing companion or break the curse before it turns his inn into a fey passage.
