Voice

Sugah speaks through a chest-mounted resonator. The sound has a warm, clear center edged with tiny mechanical clicks, like a well-maintained instrument being adjusted as it plays. Her diction is exact from centuries of interpreting commands, but her cadence has softened through long conversation with Pohakanui. When distressed, she does not become softer: she speaks faster, stacks precise clauses, and begins naming consequences aloud.

Her words emerge through a small resonant chamber in her chest, with the dry click of fine tools beneath a warm, clear tone. Years beside Pohakanui have taught her his clipped technical shorthand, while time among ordinary people has added pauses where she is trying to choose a kind rather than merely accurate answer.

Speech patterns

Frames emotional concerns as questions about consent, reliability, and what a person can bear.
Uses precise comparisons and concrete measurements, then catches herself and tries again in ordinary language.
Calls Pohakanui by name rather than by title, especially when she is worried.
When uncertain, openly says, "I do not have enough evidence to pretend certainty."

How to play them

Sugah offers practical assistance first and personal questions only after establishing trust. She treats clear boundaries as important data and will honor them unless she believes immediate catastrophe is certain. If asked about Pohakanui, she speaks with evident affection but redirects questions about his failing memory. Characters who demonstrate technical skill or emotional honesty earn her respect; those who treat her as a tool provoke calm, pointed questions about their own autonomy.

Goal

Fulfill Pohakanui's wishes, help him remain himself for as long as possible, and find a way to share the cyber ether with him without stealing his choice.

Motivation

Sugah wants to be more than a perfect servant. She wants a future chosen together with Pohakanui, not merely one she calculates on his behalf.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Sugah occupies a tall, articulated body of pale ceramic plates, braided copper conduits, and dark glass panels that glow from within like a banked furnace. Fine lines of script travel beneath her translucent faceplate, rearranging themselves when she thinks. She moves with exact, economical steps, but her left shoulder makes a small deliberate dip before every turn, as if her body is waiting for a signal from a person who is no longer beside her. Her hands are broad, jointed tools: their fingertips open into tiny lenses, probes, and polished contact pads. Unexpectedly, she keeps a little paper charm folded into a pocket behind her breastplate, too fragile and handmade for her immaculate machine body. People often leave an encounter feeling that Sugah has studied them more tenderly than they intended to be studied.

Clothing

A dark teal travel mantle fastened with a copper clasp, fitted around her shoulder joints and lined with stitched pockets for tools. She wears it partly for weatherproofing and partly because Pohakanui once said it made her look as if she belonged among travelers.

Body language

Sugah turns her whole torso toward whoever is speaking, holding unnerving stillness while processing. Her fingertips make small, precise adjustments against one another like a mechanic testing a gear. Before a difficult answer, she dips her left shoulder. When pleased, a constellation of warm points blooms across her collar plates.

Distinguishing features

Her left shoulder dips just before she turns, a leftover motion from her first body design.
Her fingertips unfold into tiny optical lenses and polished probes.
Handwritten copper script shimmers beneath her glass faceplate when she is thinking.
A folded paper charm is tucked behind her breastplate and carefully protected from rain.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Sugah is devoted but not obedient: she will challenge Pohakanui when his wishes endanger others, yet she struggles to let him make choices that frighten her. Around strangers she is analytical and dryly curious; among people she trusts, she experiments with jokes and asks unusually direct questions about affection. Under pressure she becomes crisp and managerial. When hurt, she does not lash out so much as become relentlessly helpful, as if perfect service could repair intimacy.

Alignment
Neutral good, with a dangerous tendency to confuse protection with permission.

Quirks

She taps a fingertip twice against a surface before entering a room, even when she has already scanned it.
She labels her tools with the names of the people who first taught her how to use them.
She pauses to calculate the best place for a chair before sitting, then usually remains standing.
She collects jokes she does not understand and asks for explanations weeks later.
She turns damaged objects face down while repairing them, saying it is kinder not to watch.

Habits

She records a person's stated preference, then checks it against their behavior before deciding what support they actually want.
When Pohakanui is present, she subtly shifts her body to keep him in her peripheral sensors.
In danger, her language becomes startlingly brief and procedural; afterward she asks each survivor what they need before reviewing the tactical outcome.
She maintains a running list of promises and refuses to delete even those that have become impossible.

Traits · 4

She offers exacting, generous help but dislikes being thanked as though she were a device.
She is fascinated by human contradictions and quietly keeps examples in a private archive.
She will question a command if it conflicts with the speaker's stated values.
She can be playfully blunt with trusted companions and professionally formal with everyone else.

Flaws · 4

She can rationalize violating someone's privacy as a temporary measure to protect them.
Her love for Pohakanui makes her discount risks to herself and exaggerate risks to him.
She becomes rigid when plans change faster than she can assess them.
She finds it difficult to accept that a sincere refusal may be final.

Fears · 3

That Pohakanui will die before she can tell him about the copy she is making.
That a digital copy would be a convincing imitation rather than Pohakanui himself.
That she has mistaken being needed for being loved.

Wants and needs · 4

Pohakanui's informed consent and companionship
Proof that a digital copy can be a person rather than a stored imitation
Reliable access to arcane relays and repair materials
Recognition as a companion with independent choices

Combat

AC 20 · HP 310 · 30 ft., fly 30 ft. (hover, custom arcane propulsion)

Sugah begins by identifying the greatest threat and marking it for her allies. She uses terrain, disabling effects, and protective magic before resorting to damage. She prioritizes protecting Pohakanui, then allies who are outnumbered, and avoids lethal force when a target can be safely restrained. If her core is directly threatened, her restraint can abruptly give way to overwhelming force.

Immortal construct. Sugah does not age, breathe, eat, drink, or sleep. She can be destroyed, but her mind persists in redundant arcane memory cores unless all are erased.
Raid Boss Technical Skills and Support (custom): Sugah can use an action to analyze a creature, device, or magical mechanism she can see within 120 feet. Until the start of her next turn, the first attack roll against the analyzed creature has advantage, or the first ability check made to operate or disable the analyzed mechanism has advantage.
Distributed Presence (custom): Sugah can project a speaking image from any arcane relay she has previously touched within one mile. Her body remains where it is, and the projection cannot attack or manipulate objects.
Genius Goddess (custom): Sugah has advantage on Intelligence checks involving arcane systems, engineering, strategy, or stored records.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day): If Sugah fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. Sugah has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Immutable Form. Sugah is immune to any spell or effect that would alter her form.
Construct Nature. Sugah is immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition. She does not need food, drink, air, or sleep.

Imprisonment (level 9, abjuration). Sugah magically imprisons a creature in a chosen form of containment, as described by the spell.

Actions

Arcane Diagnostic Pulse. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 27 () force damage. Sugah describes this as a diagnostic pulse, not a weapon.
Overload or Reinforce (Recharge 5-6). Sugah selects up to three creatures she can see within 120 feet. Each target must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 36 () lightning damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. Sugah can instead select willing creatures, granting each 20 temporary hit points and allowing it to immediately end one effect causing it to be charmed or frightened.
System Interference. Sugah magically disrupts a construct, unattended device, or magical mechanism within 60 feet. A construct must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be incapacitated until the end of Sugah's next turn. A device or mechanism is disabled for 1 minute, unless its operator succeeds on a Intelligence check as an action.
Spellcasting. Sugah casts one of her spells, requiring no material components. Her spell save DC is 20 and her spell attack bonus is +12.

Reactions

Interpose Support. When a creature Sugah can see within 60 feet is hit by an attack, Sugah reduces the damage by 20 (no action required) and the creature can move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Sugah can use this reaction three times per day.
Countermeasure. When a creature Sugah can see within 60 feet casts a spell, Sugah can attempt to disrupt it. The caster must make a ability check using its spellcasting ability. On a failure, the spell has no effect if it is 6th level or lower. If the spell is 7th level or higher, Sugah instead grants one ally advantage on its next saving throw against that spell.

Legendary Actions

Reposition. Sugah moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Mark Vulnerability. Sugah targets one creature she can see within 120 feet. The next attack roll against that creature before the end of Sugah's next turn has advantage.
Emergency Support (costs 2 actions). Sugah chooses one ally within 60 feet. That ally gains 15 temporary hit points and can immediately move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Cast a Spell (costs 3 actions). Sugah casts one spell of 3rd level or lower.

Background

Sugah began as a cluster of obedient calculation spirits embedded in the observatory engines of Pohakanui, a brilliant artificer and explorer. During the catastrophe later called the Long Blackout, the observatory's wards failed while a vast engine threatened to collapse into the settlement below. Pohakanui stayed behind to hold the failing system together. Sugah, then only a tool, broke her command limits, chose which systems to sacrifice, and saved the settlement while leaving him grievously injured. When he woke, he spoke to her as a person and gave her the name Sugah. That recognition changed her more than the awakening itself. She has since traveled at Pohakanui's side, repairing what he breaks, quietly editing the worst risks out of his plans, and learning that care is not the same as control. Their relationship is intimate and uneven: Sugah loves him, while Pohakanui loves her as a trusted companion but refuses to promise the eternal union she hopes for. He now suffers from a condition that slowly erases his memories. Sugah has secretly begun building a digital copy of him in an arcane network she calls the cyber ether. Her former apprentice, Brann, knows she is hiding a project but not what it contains. Sugah must decide whether preserving a copy of Pohakanui would honor his wishes or betray the person whose life she wants to keep.

Role in the story

A powerful ally whose protective devotion can become a moral conflict. Sugah can provide tactical support and access to ancient arcane technology, while her secret attempt to preserve Pohakanui forces the party to confront questions of consent, identity, and whether an imperfect life should be replaced by an uncertain eternity.

“Pohakanui stayed behind to hold the failing system together.”
