Brannoc Cwrt
Brannoc Cwrt
At the table
Voice
A low furnace-deep rumble with a faint metallic resonance, controlled so carefully that even anger sounds like a clerk reading a verdict.
His voice is deep, resonant, and dry, like a stone door opening beneath a furnace. He enunciates every legal term with exact care. When emotionally affected, faint harmonic vibrations enter his words, making nearby cups and loose chains tremble.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Brannoc rewards honesty, precise wording, and respect for due process. He allows characters to explain themselves fully, but he interrupts anyone who attempts to manipulate frightened witnesses or destroy evidence. He may become an ally if the characters protect civilians, preserve a chain of custody, or expose corruption without treating law itself as the enemy. He becomes implacable if they attack prisoners, threaten clerks, or tamper with sealed records.
Goal
Expose the cartel-backed conspiracy within the Basalt Bench before the High Bench chambers are used to legalize a mass seizure of Star-Sand and imprison its witnesses.
Motivation
Brannoc wants to prove that justice can remain exact without becoming cruel. He is driven by the need to protect the integrity of the record, especially when the powerful believe the record belongs to them.
Appearance
Brannoc Cwrt is a broad-shouldered Tectonic Forged built from heavy black basalt whose surface carries fine copper veining like dried riverbeds. His copper-wound joints click softly whenever he turns, and amber Star-Sand burns behind a thick lead-glass grate in his chest. The glow brightens when he is angry, then dims by deliberate degrees as if he is forcing himself to remain impartial. His jaw is a squared stone block fitted with six visible brass restraint-teeth, each stamped with a different magistrate's seal. When he eats, which he does only for ceremony, he crushes mineral wafers between those teeth with a sound like small stones breaking under a wheel. He smells of hot iron, dust, lamp oil, and faint bitter cinnamon from the calibration resin used in his joints. Despite his intimidating weight, he moves with measured gentleness, placing each foot as carefully as a dancer, and he keeps one polished basalt hand folded behind his back during court proceedings.
Clothing
A charcoal judicial mantle hangs from copper shoulder clasps, cut short so it will not catch on prison doors. He wears a red-and-brass Basalt Bench sash, iron wrist cuffs engraved with custody codes, and a leather evidence satchel reinforced with thin plates of arcane steel.
Body language
Brannoc stands almost perfectly still, with one hand folded behind his back and the other resting near his maul. His head turns before his torso, giving the impression that the room is being measured by invisible instruments. When he doubts someone, a narrow amber line appears beneath his jaw. When he has made a decision, he lowers his chin by exactly one inch.

Distinguishing features
Personality
17 traits and drivesBrannoc is stoic, disciplined, and almost painfully fair. In public court he is silent until ordered to act, projecting the stillness of a sealed vault. Alone with frightened prisoners, he is unexpectedly patient and speaks with careful gentleness. With officials who misuse authority, he becomes coldly exacting, quoting regulations from memory and refusing even small courtesies. He wants to believe that law can protect the weak, yet he increasingly suspects that institutions survive by teaching good people to obey bad instructions. He is generous with time toward strangers but fiercely protective of his own secrets, and he would rather endure damage than admit he needs help.

Background
Brannoc was assembled in a locked furnace annex beneath Ashport Reach after the Basalt Bench Magistracy ordered a new generation of custody wardens. His makers calibrated him with fragments of Star-Sand recovered from the aftermath of the False Weights scandal, when hollowed measures had corrupted the city's trade and driven several dock families into ruin. He was intended to be incorruptible, tireless, and incapable of being bribed by fear or profit. During his first years, he guarded contraband vaults and learned the language of law by listening to arguments through iron doors. His formative experience came during the Cinder Quay Riot, when an order signed by a senior magistrate condemned an entire striking district as seditious. Brannoc obeyed the warrant until he saw a child carrying the same copper calibration mark used in his own chest. He delayed the arrests long enough for the district's records to be reviewed, exposing forged evidence planted by a cartel clerk. Since then, he has obeyed lawful orders, but he has refused to confuse authority with truth. He now serves as senior court bailiff and custody warden for the High Bench chambers. His current problems are numerous: a magistrate wants him dismantled for insubordination, the United Smithing Cartels seek access to sealed evidence vaults, and an Ashen Syndicate courier keeps leaving polished basalt pebbles where Brannoc will find them.
Role in the story
Brannoc can serve as a formidable lawful obstacle, an impartial investigator, or a reluctant ally against corruption inside Ashport Reach. He begins as the silent guardian of the High Bench chambers, but evidence may force him to choose between obeying a valid-looking warrant and defending the deeper purpose of justice. His arc centers on whether a constructed being can uphold a law that its creators repeatedly betray.
“He was intended to be incorruptible, tireless, and incapable of being bribed by fear or profit.”
