Zekhri Mavash
Zekhri Mavash
At the table
Voice
A dry, even rasp shaped by years of reading names over office clatter and calling instructions through rain. He articulates with clerkly precision. His sarcasm arrives as a sudden, compact turn of phrase, while anger makes his speech quicker and more exact rather than softer.
His voice has the dry, even rasp of a man who spent years reading names over the clatter of office floors and shouting instructions through rain. He articulates carefully, with the clipped rhythm of someone used to dictating records. His humor arrives in a sudden sideways turn of phrase, delivered with the same composure as a formal ruling. When angered, he speaks faster and more precisely, as though trying to finish the argument before it can become a waste of time.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a warning that his appearance is unpleasant and a request for honest answers. Offer a clear explanation of the process and allow a subject to tell their account uninterrupted once. If they evade, ask narrower questions and point out contradictions without theatrics. He respects sincere remorse more than a polished defense, but does not mistake remorse for repair. Players can earn his cooperation by helping him identify victims or by challenging his assumptions with evidence rather than threats.
Goal
Find a way to include the harmed and forgotten in every soul's assessment, then recover the names of the tenants whose deaths he once treated as a delay in his work.
Motivation
To make judgment accurate without letting accuracy become an excuse for cruelty.
Appearance
Zekhri's face and body are scored with deep, uneven gashes that look wet and freshly opened, though no blood falls. The wounds pull at his expression without quite changing it, lending his composed smile the unsettling air of a mask that has been cut and carefully put back together. He is usually seen with his weight settled on the balls of his feet, as if waiting for a witness to finish before he moves. His gaze travels to hands, doorways, and the empty space beside a speaker, where a dead person's testimony might be standing. He moves with the brisk, economical turns of a clerk accustomed to crossing a crowded office, then pauses with unnerving stillness. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny paper kite tucked into his folio and sometimes flies it in the still air of the Eclipsed Realms.
Clothing
A high-collared, dark wool coat with narrow pockets for forms, a buttoned waistcoat, and immaculate cuffs that are stained at their edges with indelible black ink. The clothes are old-fashioned but carefully mended. A slim chain holds a brass page marker at his breast, and his folio is bound in cracked gray hide.
Body language
He stands square to the person he is questioning, but places his weight forward as if already prepared to cross the room. His fingers make small measuring motions above the folio. He gives a precise, courteous nod when someone answers plainly, and taps the quill once against the page when they waste time.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesZekhri is polite and calm because he believes courtesy keeps a difficult hearing from becoming a contest of power. He can be jovial and sharply sarcastic when someone makes a clever point, yet he has little patience for stalling or grandstanding. He is exacting with the guilty and unexpectedly gentle with the frightened, though he dislikes being thanked for either. When he is tired, the clerk in him takes over and he treats an emotional story like a form with missing fields; when something reminds him of his own failure, he becomes unusually willing to listen.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, with a growing and uncomfortable awareness that procedure can preserve injustice as easily as order.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 97 · 30 ft.Zekhri prefers to end a confrontation through restraint, distance, and clear warnings. He uses mage armor before a known threat, then favors wall of force, hold monster, or confusion to isolate and control opponents. He marks a dangerous target with Name in the Margin and uses counterspell against magic that could compromise the hearing or harm bystanders. If cornered, he uses dimension door to reposition and reserves disintegrate for a genuine existential threat. He will not pursue a fleeing opponent merely to punish them.

Background
Before death, Zekhri Mavash was a human clerk and field assessor for the Aurum Synod, the fabricator mages who create and control Arlyurl's money. He began as a meticulous young administrator who believed a clean account could protect ordinary people from arbitrary levies. As his standing rose, he became the man sent to collect back taxes from households already ruined by Synod assessments. He recorded their names, seized their tools, and told himself that enforcing the rule evenly was kinder than choosing favorites. During one collection, a flood-damaged tenement collapsed while he was inside retrieving its sealed tax records. He spent his final moments trying to keep the papers dry as tenants called for help. That death did not make him a monster, but it made his disregard impossible to excuse. In the Eclipsed Realms, fallen spirits recognized his painstaking dedication and elevated him to soul auditor, where he weighs the harms of the newly arrived. He still insists that a consistent process is better than vengeance, but he has begun adding a section to his reports for the people harmed by a sinner's choices. He exchanges formal letters with an old Synod colleague who now regrets their work, and quietly searches for the names of the tenants who died in the collapse.
Role in the story
A procedural gatekeeper, investigator, and potential uneasy ally. Zekhri can explain the customs of the Eclipsed Realms, assess the souls of the dead, and direct characters toward unresolved cases. His own past makes him a useful moral counterweight: he believes order matters, but is beginning to understand that order without attention to its victims can be another form of violence.
