At the table

Voice

A dry, firm voice with a faint rasp from years of smoke and forge heat. It carries easily through a workshop without becoming a shout. When he is alarmed, his breath stutters once and his consonants strike harder, as if he is setting each word in place.

He speaks in compact, practical sentences, shaped by years of talking over hammer strikes and caravan noise. He gives consonants a crisp edge and uses pauses to judge whether he has been understood. When rattled, his breath catches high in his chest and his words become faster, clipped like hammer blows; he does not lower his voice.

Speech patterns

Uses practical comparisons: 'That plan bends like wet tin.'
Asks what a tool or weapon must endure before agreeing to make it.
Uses people's names sparingly, but remembers exactly how they take their tea and what work they do.

How to play them

Treat Berek as a craftsperson first, not a curiosity. Specific questions about materials and intended use earn his attention; boastful demands make him test the requester's patience. If players offer practical help or show concern for Ildiko, he gradually shares the truth about the siege.

Goal

Keep his forge independent, train Ildiko well enough to leave if she chooses, and make sure Doman never uses his past to threaten his family.

Motivation

Berek wants his work to protect ordinary people without making him answerable to another commander, patron, or cause.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Berek's black hair reaches the middle of his back, its coarse lengths brushed upright at the front to sharpen a pronounced widow's peak. His face is narrow and intent, with soot often caught in the creases beside his nose. Four iron studs line each eyebrow; two more sit at the front of his chin, while three small iron bolts cross the bridge of his nose from side to side. Rows of iron piercings run along both forearms from elbow to wrist. He is lean through the waist but corded across his shoulders and back. He stands with his weight settled over the balls of his feet, as if listening for a hammer's rebound, and his breath catches in tiny measured pauses when he is thinking. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny, carefully tended pot of blue alpine flowers on the hottest shelf of his forge, shielding it from sparks with a little copper hood.

Clothing

A long black tunic with a high collar and deep side slits that reveal brown work pants, tucked into high black boots. His sleeves are fitted close to the forearms so they cannot catch on tools; a soot-dark leather apron hangs within reach of the forge.

Body language

He waits with one foot slightly forward, shoulders loose and hands held near his belt as though ready to catch something falling. When unsettled, his breath pauses at the top of an inhale and his jaw works around the nail. He looks at a person's hands while they explain what they need.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Berek is patient with metal and impatient with excuses. In the forge he is exacting and quietly generous, offering fair prices and teaching anyone who shows care. Outside it he is wary, dryly funny, and reluctant to let anyone see how much he worries. He dislikes being praised for courage, yet will step between danger and a stranger before considering the cost.

Quirks

Chews an iron nail like a piece of straw and taps it against his teeth when weighing a decision.
Names each hammer he makes, but refuses to tell anyone the names.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Counts the beats between a hammer strike and its echo when he is anxious.
Removes one boot before entering his own forge, claiming he can feel a bad floorboard better that way.

Habits

He tests a new tool by tapping it against a block of scrap iron, then listens with his eyes half closed.
When worried, he checks the forge's chimney draft even if he is nowhere near the fire.
After finishing a difficult job, he cleans his tools before he allows himself to eat.

Traits · 3

He gives careful, generous advice about craft, but resists advice about his own life.
He jokes when a room is tense, then turns blunt the moment someone is in danger.
He is proud of his work and distrustful of anyone who treats a weapon as a symbol rather than a responsibility.

Flaws · 3

Treats useful silence as safer than an honest explanation, even with people he trusts.
Can become stubbornly controlling when someone else works near a dangerous tool.
Keeps helping people who cannot repay him, then quietly resents the strain.

Fears · 3

That his old commander will discover where his mother lives and use her to force his return.
That Ildiko will inherit his habit of solving moral problems by making enemies.
That one day he will hear a plea for help and choose the job in front of him instead.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants enough steady work to keep the forge open without accepting military contracts.
Needs to tell Ildiko the truth before Doman's search reaches the town.
Wants to visit his mother but fears drawing attention to her.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 38 · 30 ft.

Berek uses his hammer to control space rather than chase foes. He targets weapons, knees, and shield arms, keeping his back to a wall or workbench when possible. He avoids killing when a disabling blow will do, but becomes relentless if someone threatens his apprentice or the people sheltering in his shop.

Background

Berek learned the forge from his mother, who made hinges and farm tools in the riverside town of Sava. At seventeen, he joined a caravan smith crew and discovered that his gift was not merely making metal strong, but noticing what it would become under strain. During a winter siege, he was ordered to repair the gate chains while trapped townsfolk pounded from the other side. His commander demanded that he finish the weapons first. Berek instead sabotaged the commander's blade and used the recovered metal to reinforce the gate; the delay cost the garrison its position, but saved the trapped families. He left the company in disgrace and has since built a modest forge near a busy road. He sends part of each season's earnings to his mother, though he has not visited in three years. His former commander, Doman, now buys weapons from local smiths and has begun asking pointed questions about Berek's past. Meanwhile, Berek's apprentice, Ildiko, wants to turn the forge into a place where anyone can learn the trade, a plan Berek fears will attract the wrong kind of attention.
