At the table

Voice

A dry, sandpapery rasp carries through wind and surf, supported by a broad chest trained to project over rigging. In close conversation he speaks at an even pace; giving orders, he cuts each phrase short and sharply articulated.

His voice has a dry, rasping edge from salt air and years of calling orders across wind and rigging. He clips commands to the essential words, but lets a story run longer when the crew is safe and the night watch is quiet. His speech is direct, with nautical terms used naturally rather than as decoration.

Speech patterns

Uses practical nautical comparisons, especially when explaining risks or loyalties.
Asks what a person intends to do next before deciding whether to trust them.
Names a cost plainly, then leaves room for the listener to answer.
Calls his crew by name when giving orders, even in a storm.

How to play them

Meet him with a clear purpose and a willingness to discuss consequences. Strongtail respects practical competence, honest disagreement, and concern for local people. He grows guarded when someone treats the Prismatic Owl as a prize or assumes his opposition to the Imperials makes him an easy ally.

Goal

Find the Prismatic Owl's final resting place before The Hawk, and ensure it remains beyond the reach of those who would exploit it.

Motivation

He believes a captain's duty extends beyond the ship, especially when powerful outsiders treat coastal peoples and their history as resources to seize.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Commodore Strongtail has pale, salt-sheened scales, each edged with a faint pearl luster that catches lanternlight like wet stone. He stands square and still until he moves, then crosses a deck with a low, rolling stride that barely shifts his balance. His jaw is broad and heavy; when he eats, he cracks shellfish with his back teeth and spits the fragments neatly into a tin cup. He keeps his teeth scrubbed bright with a bitter clove brush, an unexpectedly fastidious ritual for a captain who sleeps in his boots.

Clothing

Studded leather armor darkened by spray, a deep blue cape whose hem is salt-rough and patched from travel, and well-worn pirate boots with softened creases at the ankles. His dagger is sheathed on his right hip; the jeweled basket-hilt rapier hangs on his left.

Body language

He keeps his chest toward the person he is addressing and his feet angled toward the nearest clear route across the deck. When weighing a promise, his tongue briefly presses against the back of one bright, carefully cleaned tooth.

Distinguishing features

Pale scales with a pearly sheen, especially along the brow ridges and shoulders.
A broad jaw and unusually bright teeth, maintained with deliberate care.
A bejeweled basket hilt on his left-hip rapier, its stones dulled by salt but tightly secured.
His blue cape is patched inside with small, neatly stitched sailcloth repairs.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Strongtail is decisive when lives are at immediate risk, yet distrustful of decisions made too quickly for political convenience. He can be warm and unguarded among his crew, trading dry jokes over a meal, but turns stern when anyone treats local people as obstacles or curiosities. He believes in loyalty, though he tests it by asking hard questions rather than offering easy praise.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Scrubs his teeth with a clove brush after every meal, even when the ship is taking on water.
Taps twice on a rail before stepping across it, a habit from learning to judge whether a deck was sound.
Keeps a smooth, sea-worn pebble in his pocket and turns it over whenever he must wait.
Refuses to let anyone polish the jewels on his rapier hilt, insisting the salt dulling helps him remember where it has been.

Habits

Checks the set of sails and the sound of rigging before answering a difficult question.
Gives orders by naming the person and the exact task, never by shouting a general command.
When discussing a lost ship or a failed rescue, rubs one thumb over the basket hilt of his rapier.
Makes time to hear complaints from deckhands, but expects the speaker to propose a remedy.

Traits · 3

Protective of his crew, but willing to demand discipline from them.
Patient with honest uncertainty, impatient with concealed motives.
Proud of his command, yet uneasy when people defer to his title without question.

Flaws · 3

Once he commits to a course, he can mistake stubbornness for moral resolve.
He carries too much responsibility personally and is slow to delegate decisions involving relics.
His open contempt for exploitative powers can make negotiations collapse before he has secured a safer outcome.

Fears · 3

That the Prismatic Owl will be taken from its rightful resting place and turned into a tool of conquest.
That his pursuit of The Hawk will put his crew in danger for the sake of his own pride.
That the people he protects will come to see him as another outsider claiming authority over their heritage.

Wants and needs · 3

Reliable charts and testimony that do not come from Imperial sources.
A way to keep the Wave Rider's crew safe while continuing the search.
The custodians' consent before approaching the Prismatic Owl's final resting place.

Combat

AC 28 · HP 150 · 25 feet, swim 15 feet

Strongtail uses the ship's rigging, rails, and crew as terrain, seeking to make opponents off-guard before striking with his rapier. He gives crisp orders that let allies reposition or attack, and uses his dagger when pressed at close quarters. If the fight threatens civilians or his crew, he prioritizes getting them clear over pursuing a fleeing enemy.

Background

Strongtail learned command among coastal pilots who navigated by reefs, current, and the smell of rain coming over open water. He earned his first command by steering a damaged vessel through a night squall while its officers argued over whether to abandon the local fisherfolk trapped on a reef. The rescue saved the people and cost the ship its cargo, making him a captain respected by crews and mistrusted by merchants who count profit first. In later years he became Commodore, gathering a loose force of sailors who would rather answer to a hard-won reputation than an empire. The Imperial pursuit of him through the Aurora Comma Isles made the conflict personal, especially as he learned that The Hawk was seeking indigenous relics for power and prestige. Now Strongtail sails the Wave Rider, trying to find the Prismatic Owl's final resting place before The Hawk can claim it. He also watches for the Cult of the Kraken and the Red Wanderer, whose schemes threaten the sea communities he has sworn to defend. His quartermaster, Brask, argues that the hunt is drawing the crew into dangers beyond their pay; Strongtail trusts Brask's judgment but refuses to let the relic become another trophy taken from its people.

Role in the story

A capable, principled maritime ally and rival to The Hawk, drawing the party into a race for the Prismatic Owl while resisting Imperial influence and the Cult of the Kraken's efforts.
