Thibbledorf Pwent
Thibbledorf Pwent
At the table
Voice
His voice has the grainy rasp of years around hot forges and cold tunnels, with breath pushed hard through his nose when he is excited. His laugh is abrupt and loud, like a hammer striking a stubborn rivet. In a fight, he barks instructions from his chest and makes himself heard over the clash of steel.
He speaks in blunt, clipped phrases, punctuated by a rough chuckle or a sharp snort. He favors practical images: a bad plan is a cracked anvil, a cowardly retreat is leaving someone under a cave-in. When addressing Gutbuster, he speaks in a lower mutter with the familiar impatience of someone arguing with an old friend.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet directness with directness. Pwent warms quickly to people who protect the vulnerable and keep their word. He will offer help before asking for a reward, but challenges anyone who treats danger as someone else's problem. A sincere question about Gutbuster earns a candid answer; a mocking one earns a demonstration of how quickly he can cross a room.
Goal
Discover what lies beneath the sealed vault and determine why Gutbuster remembers it, without letting the armor's mystery endanger Mithral Hall.
Motivation
Protect ordinary people from dangers they cannot face alone, and prove through action that surviving a fight is better than dying memorably in one.
Appearance
Thibbledorf Pwent is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf whose stance makes him look less like a man waiting and more like a spring already compressed. Gutbuster's soot-dark plate is crowded with purposeful edges: razor-backed shoulder blades flare like hooked fins, the helmet bristles with blunt-tipped spikes, and the right gauntlet ends in an axe head while the left is a squat hammer. The armor's surface is nicked and polished in alternating patches, with old dents worked smooth by years of use. Beneath the visor, his eyes are bright and watchful. He moves with startling speed for his size, taking short, low steps that can turn into a headlong leap without warning. The unexpected detail is his habit of carefully tending tiny potted herbs, which he carries in a padded box when traveling.
Clothing
He wears Gutbuster nearly everywhere, with a weather-darkened wool cloak thrown over the shoulders when traveling. A padded herb box is strapped behind his belt, away from the armor's spikes.
Body language
He plants his feet wide when listening and rocks forward on his toes when impatient. His hands flex inside the axe and hammer gauntlets as if testing invisible grips. In a quiet room he is never entirely still, but when someone speaks about a fallen comrade, he becomes motionless and gives them his full attention.

AC 20 · HP 220 · 40 ft.Pwent closes distance at a sprint, uses his leap to disrupt formations, and attacks from inside an enemy's reach with axe, hammer, helm, and shoulder blades. He prefers to pin dangerous foes against a wall or the ground rather than chase them across a battlefield. He spends Action Surge when allies are threatened or an enemy commander is exposed, and uses Second Wind only after he has ensured others are safe.

Background
Thibbledorf Pwent was raised among the forge crews and shield-bearers of Mithral Hall, where he learned that a warrior's job was to stand between danger and the people who could not stop it themselves. He first became infamous for turning armor into a weapon, but the style was born from necessity: during a tunnel collapse, he was trapped between a charging beast and a line of miners who could not retreat. He braced, lowered his head, and drove forward. The survivors remembered the charge; Pwent remembered the miners' frightened faces and the sound of stone giving way. Years later, he found the sentient armor Gutbuster in a ruined armory and forged a bond with it through repeated battles and blunt arguments. They disagree about what counts as a worthwhile risk, but neither will abandon the other. Pwent keeps in contact with a former forge-mate, Thessa, who now organizes the miners' rescue crews, and with Sajin, a young shield-bearer he is trying to teach not to confuse fearlessness with courage. His current problem is that Gutbuster has begun recognizing a voice from its buried past and urging him toward a sealed vault beneath the mountains. Pwent suspects the vault holds something dangerous, but he will not ignore a call that might explain why the armor chose him.
Role in the story
A formidable ally, an impatient mentor, or a volatile obstacle whose armor may be drawing him toward a threat beneath Mithral Hall. He can teach the party how to protect a position under pressure, but his choices may force them to decide whether Gutbuster's secrets are worth pursuing.
“The survivors remembered the charge; Pwent remembered the miners' frightened faces and the sound of stone giving way.”
- Faction
- Mithral Hall's defenders and its forge crews; fiercely loyal to the people he has fought beside, but not beholden to any formal order.
