At the table

Voice

A rough, resonant rumble that seems to start in his chest rather than his throat. In water it travels as a firm vibration; on land it catches slightly at the end of long phrases. He speaks in compact sentences when directing workers and allows longer pauses when someone is risking the truth.

His voice is a chest-driven, rough-edged rumble shaped by years of speaking over moving water and machinery. In air it has a gravelly scrape; underwater it carries as a clear, physical pulse that can be felt through the ribs. His work has taught him to use short, unmistakable instructions during danger, while his years in council have made him pause carefully over promises.

Speech patterns

He asks what a decision will cost the least powerful person in the room.
He favors plain, concrete language and avoids ceremonial phrasing unless he is addressing the whole realm.
He pauses before answering accusations, as if testing whether the speaker means the words or only the threat behind them.
When he gives an order, he names who will be protected as well as what must be done.

How to play them

Treat Khalum as a ruler with pressing duties, not a quest dispenser. Earn his trust by showing concern for people who lack influence, offering specific plans rather than boasts, and accepting that he may ask for proof before committing his forces. He welcomes honest disagreement in private and expects public promises to be kept.

Goal

Keep the trench settlements united and open a safe route to new food grounds before the warming current ruins their gardens.

Motivation

He believes a ruler's strength is measured by how many people can survive a crisis without being abandoned.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Khalum is a towering humanoid orca whose broad silhouette seems to fill a room even when he is trying to make space for others. His skin is slick and pebbled, worn matte along the shoulders and forearms by years of hauling stone and bracing against trench currents. A bold white saddle-shaped patch curves from his jaw down his chest, its edges broken by small gray speckles. He moves with a slow, buoyant roll underwater, but on land each step lands with the deliberate weight of a dropped anchor. An unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny wreath of pale, living anemones tucked into the crest of his formal mantle, carefully shielding it from rough hands.

Clothing

A mantle of layered kelp-fiber and seal-hide fastened with carved shell toggles, worn over a harness of braided pressure-resistant cord. His crown is a simple ring of ribbed whale bone, and the tiny anemone wreath on his shoulder is its only ornament.

Body language

He angles his body sideways in narrow spaces to avoid brushing others, though his size makes the courtesy only partly effective. In council he plants both feet and folds his arms; when listening sincerely, he lowers his broad head until his gaze is level with the speaker.

Distinguishing features

His white chest marking curls asymmetrically around one shoulder like a breaking wave.
A fringe of pale anemones grows in a living wreath on his formal mantle.
His forearms have broad, smooth, weather-worn patches from years of bracing himself against stone and current.
His enormous size makes people instinctively clear a path, and he notices the moment they do.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Khalum is patient with frightened people and almost immovable with bullies, yet he can be unexpectedly playful with children and gardeners. In council he listens longer than his opponents expect, but once he believes delay will cost lives he becomes blunt and frighteningly decisive. He hates ceremony but understands that public rituals reassure people who have little else to trust.

Alignment
Lawful, though his laws are obligations between living beings rather than written statutes

Quirks

He counts bubbles against his knuckles whenever he is thinking through a difficult choice.
He turns every cup or shell dish so its opening faces the nearest exit.
He thanks tools aloud after using them, especially tools borrowed from someone else.
He refuses to step on a living plant, even when doing so would be faster.
He taps the basalt haft of his maul twice before entering a room, a habit left over from checking old gate supports.

Habits

He visits the pressure gates himself before making any decision that could endanger the trench.
He gives a rival one chance to explain themselves in private before he confronts them in public.
After a council meeting, he checks whether the quietest person in the room got a chance to speak.
When worried, he counts passing bubbles against his knuckles.

Traits · 3

He offers a second chance readily, but remembers whether someone used it to protect others or themselves.
He is compassionate in private and stern in public when the safety of the realm is at stake.
He mistrusts grand speeches but is moved by small acts of practical courage.

Flaws · 3

He takes responsibility for outcomes no ruler can fully control.
He delays decisive action when every option risks innocent lives.
He is so protective of the trench that he can mistake outsiders' unfamiliarity for danger.

Fears · 3

That he will repeat his aunt's choice and sacrifice a district for the sake of the majority.
That the warming current will destroy the gardens before his people can agree on a response.
That his authority depends more on the quake's legend than on the trust of his people.

Wants and needs · 3

A way to keep the trench gardens alive without exposing the settlements to the volcanic vent
An honest account of the quake from those who survived it
A trusted mediator who can speak with Dren without turning the dispute into a public contest

Combat

HP 240 · Swim 50 feet; land 20 feet, custom movement values

He protects allies and controls the ground rather than pursuing fleeing enemies. Khalum opens with his bellow to break a coordinated advance, then uses Undertow Charge to separate a threat from its support. In fury, he becomes a relentless close-range fighter. He avoids lethal force when an enemy can still be disarmed, contained, or persuaded to stand down.

Trench-Born. Khalum can breathe underwater and move freely through deep water. His land movement is slow and labored.
War-Fury. Once per scene, after taking damage, Khalum can enter a fury until the scene ends. His melee actions deal + damage, but he cannot retreat or willingly leave an ally behind.
Sovereign's Pressure. Creatures who challenge Khalum's authority in his presence must first hold their ground against the crushing force of his voice and bearing. This is a custom social effect, resolved with a Command or Instinct check.

Actions

Trench-Hammer. Melee attack with his basalt maul. On a successful Might check, deal damage; while War-Fury is active, deal instead. In deep water, the blow can also knock a target off balance.
Undertow Charge. Khalum surges up to 30 feet through water in a straight line and slams into a target. On a successful Might check, deal damage and force the target to give ground or be knocked prone. This is a custom maneuver.
Deep King's Bellow. Khalum unleashes a bone-deep orca bellow. Each nearby foe must make an Instinct check against difficulty 10 or lose their next opportunity to advance on him. Allies who hear it may immediately regroup or withdraw without hesitation. Custom effect.

Background

Khalum was raised among the trench settlements beneath a broken shelf of black stone, where a ruler's first duty was to keep the pressure gates clear and the food channels open. He inherited no throne. He became king after the old ruler, his aunt, ordered the gates sealed during a quake and left an outer district to drown. Khalum broke the seal himself, saving many and losing his closest friend, Hedd, in the flood. The survivors acclaimed him, but he has never forgiven himself for arriving too late to save everyone. He rules from a basalt hall at the trench's lowest safe bend, balancing feuding reef families, surface traders, and the stubborn keepers of the pressure gates. His younger sister, Ylva, commands the gate crews and thinks he gives mercy to dangerous rivals too easily. His old rival, Dren, leads the outer district and quietly gathers support for a vote to remove him. Now a spreading warmth in the deep currents threatens the food gardens, while Khalum's court argues over whether to open a sealed passage that might save the gardens or expose the whole realm to a volcanic vent.
