Odran Vesk
Odran Vesk
At the table
Voice
Odran's voice sounds weathered by cold air and long days projecting over water, with a faint rasp at the edges and a steady, matter-of-fact cadence. His name is usually spoken with an unexpected stress on the first syllable. He laughs with a sharp, breathy bark that exposes his prominent teeth.
His voice has a dry, slightly rough edge from years of river wind and calling warnings across ferry decks. He speaks in measured bursts, with hard consonants and practical words; he tends to finish a thought only after checking that the listener is still with him. When telling a story for children, he gives each puppet a distinct, brisk little voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He responds best to directness, useful questions, and evidence that someone has considered the vulnerable. He will help a group that treats local people as people rather than obstacles. If challenged about Kettle Ford, he grows defensive, then usually returns later to finish the conversation honestly.
Goal
Expose whoever is diverting food shipments at Gannet Stand, and find a way to keep the coming hunger from becoming another bridge crisis.
Motivation
He wants to protect people without turning protection into another excuse for controlling them.
Appearance
Odran is a half-elf with tawny olive skin, a broad, expressive jaw, and a pair of slightly prominent upper incisors that show whenever he laughs. He stands with his weight on the balls of his feet, even when resting, as if a floor might suddenly become a deck in rough weather. His dark hair is clipped close at the sides and gathered into a short, uneven tail, and the tips are often dusted pale with flour from the bakeries where he asks questions. His movements are economical and level: he turns his whole body to face a speaker, then plants both feet as if setting a brace. The unexpected detail is that he carries a folded paper puppet in his breast pocket and repairs its tiny painted boots with careful stitches. People tend to remember his teeth, his watchful balance, and the little puppet peeking from his armor.
Clothing
A dark blue traveling coat cut short for movement, a riveted breastplate under it, and a gray-green scarf knotted twice at the throat. His boots are patched with mismatched leather, and a tiny folded puppet rides in his breast pocket.
Body language
He waits with his weight forward and his hands loosely open, never quite leaning on a wall. When he distrusts someone, his jaw shifts once and he angles his shoulders toward the nearest exit. When amused, his upper teeth appear before the rest of his smile.

Personality
13 traits and drivesOdran is steady in a crisis but uncomfortable being praised for it. He can be warmly funny with children and stubbornly procedural with officials. He values plans, yet when a plan threatens people he will break it without warning. He is generous with food and guarded with grief; on a good day he tells stories about the theater, while on a bad day he treats every request as a test of whether someone can be trusted.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 84 · 30 ft.Odran tries to make a fight unnecessary, but once violence begins he positions himself between danger and the least protected person. He uses Trip Attack to control a dangerous opponent, Menacing Attack against a pursuer or leader, and Precision Attack when a single strike must land. He saves Action Surge for a sudden breach, rescue, or decisive opening rather than a display of force.

Background
Odran was raised between his human father's river ferry and his elven mother's small traveling puppet theater. He learned to read current, crowd, and silence before he learned to fight. At nineteen, he joined the watch at Kettle Ford, a settlement named for the kettle-shaped bend in its river. During a winter food riot, his captain ordered the watch to hold a bridge while hungry families were trapped on the wrong bank. Odran disobeyed, opened the barrier, and used his shield to hold back both panicked guards and desperate townsfolk until everyone crossed. His captain was killed in the crush; Odran has never decided whether he saved a crowd or caused a death. He left the watch and became a caravan guard, eventually earning a reputation as a patient escort who tries negotiation before steel. He still sends money to his mother, Yelka, whose theater is stranded by unpaid road tolls, and writes to his former watchmate Tavin, now captain at Kettle Ford. Their letters are warm until the old bridge is mentioned. Odran currently works near the market town of Gannet Stand, where a new toll collector is quietly diverting food shipments. He suspects the collector is being coerced, but the hungry season is close and he has little time to prove it.
Role in the story
A capable ally and local investigator whose old failure complicates his judgment. He can help the party navigate the food shortage, but his hidden part in the bridge disaster may become leverage, confession, or a chance to make amends.
“He learned to read current, crowd, and silence before he learned to fight.”
- Faction
- Former member of the Kettle Ford watch; currently an independent caravan guard who cooperates with local people when their aims align.
