Sister Marvera
Sister Marvera
At the table
“I have reason to think.”
Voice
Her voice has a dry rasp from years in steam-heavy washrooms and cold night air, with crisp consonants shaped by copying formal orders aloud. It carries plainly across a workroom without sounding theatrical. When she is angry, her words become faster and more specific, as if she is assembling a case while speaking.
She speaks in compact, work-shaped sentences, with the clear diction of someone who copied orders for years and the practical vocabulary of a washhouse and kitchen. She uses dates, routes, and names as anchors, and corrects herself aloud when she realizes she has crossed from evidence into inference.

How to play them
Offer Marvera a specific claim and a way to verify it, rather than demanding immediate trust. She shares information in stages and expects the party to confirm names, dates, and locations independently. If they protect endangered witnesses without using them as bait, she becomes more forthcoming. If they boast about exploiting her contacts, she ends the meeting and changes locations.
Goal
Stop Kaelor's operation, protect the people it has endangered, and expose the Tribunal leak without handing her former faction an excuse to silence witnesses.
Motivation
Make the people endangered by secret power safer than they were before she served it, and never again confuse obedience with innocence.
Appearance
Sister Marvera looks like a capable caretaker who has spent too many nights outdoors: her cheeks are wind-roughened, her posture upright but economical, and her steps land softly as if she is used to crossing sleeping rooms. Her charcoal wool coat hangs a little too long in the sleeves, with careful square patches at both elbows and a newer, conspicuously neat repair over the left pocket. She keeps that pocket button polished bright from constant checking. At her belt hangs a tiny wooden bird with its beak worn smooth; it seems like a child's toy, not the kind of keepsake one expects an informant to guard more carefully than her papers. Her clothes are clean in the places that matter and muddy at the hem. She leaves the impression of someone who would notice a changed lock before noticing a compliment.
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat with oversized sleeves, visibly mended elbows, and a polished button on the left pocket; a plain brown dress, sturdy boots, a wool scarf, and a serviceable belt pouch. She dresses like a caretaker, not a covert agent, and keeps the coat's inner seams reinforced for hiding folded notes.
Body language
She keeps her shoulders square and her hands occupied, usually sorting scraps of paper or rubbing the wooden bird's worn beak. When she distrusts someone, she turns her chair so she can see the door without appearing to watch it. When relieved, she briefly loosens her grip on her walking stick, then catches herself.

Personality
14 traits and drivesMarvera is compassionate enough to take on other people's danger, yet suspicious enough to make them prove that accepting her help will not make things worse. In calm company she is dryly humorous and patient with honest questions; under pressure she becomes brisk, procedural, and difficult to interrupt. She wants to trust people, but treats trust as something built from checked facts rather than a feeling.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Marvera is a level 0 civilian, not a trained duelist. She avoids a fair fight, warns allies about positions and exits, and uses cover, crowds, and distractions to get endangered people away. If cornered, she jabs with her walking stick or throws a dart to interrupt pursuit, then retreats. Her statistics use a simple D&D-style ability and attack presentation; her custom features are not claimed as canonical rules.

Background
Marvera was raised among the washhouses and charity kitchens of a river ward, where she learned that people speak most freely when their hands are busy. She joined the Veiled Nightlords as a copyist and courier, believing their secrecy protected vulnerable people from a corrupt Tribunal. For years she carried sealed orders without asking what they meant. That changed during the winter evacuation at the old infirmary: she found that a Nightlords operation had used her route notes to identify families sheltering fugitives. She warned the residents, but one family was taken before she could reach them. Their youngest child, Ulo, survived by hiding in a coal chute, and Marvera has never forgiven herself for believing a good cause made every order harmless. She left the Nightlords with copied dispatches and has since exposed cabals by giving investigators small pieces of evidence they can verify. She is not a member of Kaelor's cell. She wants Kaelor's operation stopped and the people it has endangered protected, but will not trust a claim simply because it matches her suspicions. Her old friend Peni still works as a Nightlords courier and sometimes leaks warnings; her former supervisor Tavo has begun asking after her in places where she used to feel safe. Marvera currently sleeps in a different room each week and is trying to identify which Tribunal clerk is quietly selling witness names.
Role in the story
Ally and informant in the quest "Whispers of the Tribunal." Marvera helps the party investigate dangerous cabals, offers leads connected to Kaelor's operation, and insists they verify her claims. She is not a member of Kaelor's cell and prioritizes protecting the people the operation has endangered.
