Adan
Adan
At the table
Voice
Adan's voice has a dry, steady texture, with a little rasp from years of road dust and calling over weather. He places emphasis on the practical word in a sentence, like a man making sure a traveler hears the warning over the sound of a cart. His pace slows when he wants someone to examine their own reasoning.
His speech is measured and plain, shaped by years of giving instructions over wind, wagon wheels, and running water. He favors short questions and specific examples. When he is angry, he becomes more direct and uses fewer qualifications, not softer or more courteous.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Adan as a thoughtful listener rather than an oracle. He will ask what the characters want, what they have tried, and who else will bear the consequences. A sincere payment earns considered counsel, while an attempt to buy certainty earns a refusal.
Goal
Repay his debt to the roadside shrine and teach Kati how to judge danger without inheriting his guilt.
Motivation
He wants people to leave his counsel better prepared to choose, rather than dependent on him to choose for them.
Appearance
Adan is medium-tall, with deep brown skin and a composed, watchful presence. His black hair is parted with ruler-straight precision and kept close at the sides; he oils it until it catches a faint blue sheen. His eyes travel around a room in a deliberate circuit, pausing on exits, hands, and whoever has not yet spoken. He moves with the measured economy of someone accustomed to carrying water uphill, and leaves the impression that he has noticed more than he means to say.
Clothing
A carefully mended indigo traveling coat over a sand-colored tunic, a broad woven sash, and sturdy sandals. He keeps his sleeves rolled evenly and his small prayer cord tucked beneath the collar.
Body language
He sits upright but not stiffly, with both feet planted as if bracing against a current. While listening, he turns his whole face toward the speaker and keeps his hands still. When he doubts someone, his gaze shifts briefly to their hands, then to the nearest exit.

Background
Adan grew up carrying water and messages between the scattered farms of the dry Ketta road. As a young man, he served as a lay attendant at a travelers' shrine, where he learned prayers, first aid, and the difficult art of listening without rushing to fill silence. During a season of failed rains, a caravan master offered him a silver ring for advice on which route to take. Adan urged the safer, longer road. The master ignored him, took the shortcut, and lost several people in a flash flood. Adan had been right about the danger, but he had also failed to warn the families who followed the caravan. That failure changed his idea of wisdom: knowing what may happen is not the same as helping people prepare for it. Now he asks a price for counsel, not from greed but to make the seeker pause and take the answer seriously. His current troubles include an unpaid debt to the shrine's keeper, a growing queue of desperate petitioners, and a former caravan master who wants Adan to publicly absolve him. Adan still exchanges letters with the master's daughter, who believes both men owe the dead more than an apology.
Role in the story
A paid adviser who can offer direction, context, and a moral challenge, but not certainty. His old failure can connect a party's present travel problem to the flood and the people still living with its consequences.
“During a season of failed rains, a caravan master offered him a silver ring for advice on which route to take.”
- Faction
- Keeps the roadside shrine of the Ketta road, but holds no formal rank in its order.
