At the table

“Are you hurt? Can you stand? Who saw?”
From how they speak

Voice

Kassy's voice has a dry, lightly smoke-roughened edge, with crisp consonants that carry across a noisy shop. Her natural warmth comes through most clearly when speaking to Neri or explaining how something is made. When angry, she does not soften or lower her voice; she becomes more exact, naming the offense and what it will cost.

She speaks in clear, practical sentences shaped by years of calling measurements over hammer noise and bargaining with impatient customers. Her words are quick but carefully enunciated, with a slight rasp from forge smoke and a habit of clipping unnecessary explanations. She uses the vocabulary of orders, weights, and repairs even when discussing feelings.

Speech patterns

Uses exact prices and quantities to make a point: 'That is three days' wages, and you know it.'
Asks practical questions before emotional ones: 'Are you hurt? Can you stand? Who saw?'
Uses dry humor to defuse arguments, but stops joking when a child is threatened.
Calls people by their full names when she is frightened or deeply angry.

How to play them

Kassy is helpful when approached honestly and favors specific requests over grand promises. She tests a stranger's character by watching how they treat workers, children, and damaged tools. If players offer practical aid, she reciprocates with useful local knowledge. If they threaten the shop or her child, she becomes brisk, plants herself between them and the danger, and calls for help.

Goal

Keep Bent Nail open through the winter, settle the false shortage charge, and give Neri a life with choices beyond the shop.

Motivation

Protect Neri and preserve the small, useful world she has built around the smithy, without becoming dependent on anyone's charity.

Appearance

Kassy's short brown hair curls outward around her ears, as if it has been shaped by heat and impatient trimming. Her pale skin is freckled with tiny soot-dark specks that never quite wash away. She stands with her weight on the balls of her feet, always half-turned toward the nearest exit or workbench. Her yellow dress is bright but faded at the seams, and her dark jacket has been carefully patched at both elbows with mismatched pieces of sturdy cloth. The jacket's left pocket is conspicuously over-cared-for: polished smooth, mended with tiny even stitches, and kept buttoned even in the heat of the forge. She moves with a clerk's quick, economical precision, but her eyes follow every hammer blow as if counting it.

Clothing

A sun-faded yellow dress under a charcoal-brown work jacket, both repeatedly repaired. The jacket has a buttoned inner pocket with meticulous stitching; she wears practical boots and a leather apron when near the forge.

Body language

When waiting, Kassy rocks subtly onto the balls of her feet and keeps one shoulder angled toward the workbench. She presses her thumb against the carefully mended jacket pocket when worried. She makes direct eye contact when negotiating, but watches hands rather than faces when tempers rise.

The left pocket of her dark jacket is flawlessly mended and kept buttoned, even when the jacket is otherwise dusty.
She stands ready to move, weight pitched toward her toes, like someone perpetually waiting for a stuck door to give.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Kassy is warm with children and brisk with adults who waste time. She wants to believe people can be better than their debts, yet keeps careful records because experience has taught her that goodwill does not pay rent. In a calm room she jokes readily and asks after everyone's meals; under pressure she becomes sharply organized, assigning tasks and naming costs. When she is hurt, she works harder instead of admitting it.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Taps the edge of a table twice before setting down a cup, as if checking whether it is level.
Names tools by the last person who broke or repaired them.
Turns every scrap of paper blank-side up before writing on it.
When thinking, silently shapes numbers with her lips without making a sound.

Habits

Counts unfamiliar doors and windows without appearing to look at them.
Steps between an angry customer and whoever is being blamed, even when she is afraid.
Writes down promises immediately, then remembers the exact words better than the person who made them.
When exhausted, she becomes cheerful in an almost unnerving, overly practical way.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 7 · 30 ft.

Kassy avoids a fair fight. She keeps a counter, doorway, or heavy worktable between herself and danger, uses her hammer only when cornered, and throws forge grit to create an opening for herself or someone else to escape. She will not pursue a fleeing opponent.

Half-elf heritage. Kassy has darkvision out to 60 feet and advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
Custom feature, Shopkeeper's Eye. After a minute examining a mundane metal object, Kassy can usually identify its common use, obvious damage, and whether it was recently altered. This is practical experience, not magical detection.

Actions

Hammer. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Forge Grit. Kassy throws a handful of forge grit at a creature within 10 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the start of Kassy's next turn. Once used, she must spend an action gathering more grit before using this again. Custom improvised action.

Reactions

Get Behind Me. When a creature Kassy can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, she can use her reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll if she can interpose herself or a held object. She must be able to move and cannot use this reaction if the attacker is more than one size larger than her. Custom feature.

Background

Kassy Askel grew up above a small smithy, learning letters from invoices and sums from the price of iron. Her mother, an elf who repaired farm tools, taught her to judge a tool by the way it sat in a person's hand; her human father left when Kassy was young, and never returned from a merchant caravan. Years ago, a furnace accident trapped her younger brother, Toma, behind a jammed service door. Kassy broke the lock with a sledge and dragged him out, but the smith who employed her lost two fingers and the shop nearly closed. Since then she has kept the accounts and orders at the smithy called Bent Nail, a local name shortened from the old sign, 'Bend the nail before it bends you.' She is mother to Neri, a bright, stubborn child who asks why every blade needs a price. The shop's owner, Drazek, is behind on rent, and a new supplier is demanding payment for a shipment that arrived half short. Kassy is trying to keep the shop open without letting her child see how close the household is to losing its rooms.

Role in the story

A grounded local ally whose knowledge of deliveries, repairs, and neighborhood debts can reveal a larger scheme. Her precarious shop and family give the characters stakes that are not solved by simply winning a fight.
