Voice

Clear and slightly dry, with a measured cadence and the firm projection of someone accustomed to calling observations across a high-ceilinged dome. Numbers come out crisp; names are given a little more time. A sudden fright makes her draw one audible breath through her nose before she resumes in clipped, practical phrases.

Her voice has a dry, clear edge shaped by years of calling measurements across a large observatory dome. She articulates names and numbers carefully, with small pauses where she seems to test the sound against an internal calculation. When rattled, her breathing catches once before she speaks, and the next few sentences come in short, exact clauses.

Speech patterns

Frames questions as paired possibilities: “Did you see the door open, or did the room decide it had always been open?”
Uses observatory language for everyday events, calling a coincidence an alignment and a misunderstanding a bad measurement.
Offers courteous acknowledgments before disagreeing, then points out one precise detail that changes the argument.
When frightened, stops using metaphors and gives clipped, practical instructions.

How to play them

Begin with a concrete observation about the visitor, then ask a question that tests what they know. Ilyra responds well to precise evidence, honest uncertainty, and offers to protect endangered people. She becomes guarded if asked to surrender The Prismatic Ledger or explain the pact as though it were a simple bargain.

Goal

Discover whether Master Othessa survived the planar geometry experiment and determine what the impossible pattern was trying to map.

Motivation

Knowledge can make the unknown survivable, but understanding the pattern matters more to Ilyra than proving she was right.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Ilyra has the still, attentive bearing of someone listening for a mechanism behind ordinary speech. Her long fingers are stained with ink and powdered mica, the pads polished by years of turning brass instrument wheels; when she calculates, they move in tiny measured arcs, as if tracing invisible constellations. She walks with economical steps and stops so abruptly that her coat hem takes a moment to settle. Unexpectedly, she keeps a bright yellow ribbon tied around one boot, a childhood superstition she refuses to explain.

Clothing

A high-collared indigo coat with deep pockets, its cuffs patched in mismatched fabric; a grey waistcoat marked with tiny stitched measurement lines; practical boots, one tied with a bright yellow ribbon. A brass astrolabe hangs inside her coat rather than on display.

Body language

She faces people squarely but rarely fixes her gaze on their eyes; it tends to settle on the bridge of the nose, a cuff, or the shadow cast by a hand. Her fingers sketch small angles in the air. When startled, she takes one sharp, audible breath and presses both palms flat against the nearest surface, as if checking whether the world is level.

Distinguishing features

Her ink- and mica-stained fingertips have smooth, polished pads from constant contact with instrument wheels.
A thin ring of colored light sometimes crosses the irises when she looks at a bright flame.
A bright yellow ribbon is knotted around one boot, conspicuously cheerful against her scholarly clothes.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Patient and courteous, Ilyra gives people time to find the exact words they mean, yet privately sorts every sentence for hidden structure. In calm company she is curious and unexpectedly generous with her notes. Under pressure she becomes brisk, unsentimental, and willing to make a frightening choice if it prevents a larger disaster. She dislikes being treated as an oracle and dislikes even more when people mistake her caution for indecision.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest window before drinking.
Taps a surface twice before setting The Prismatic Ledger on it.
Keeps the yellow ribbon on her boot tied in a different knot each morning.
Answers some questions by writing the question mark first, then the answer.
When she cannot sleep, sorts mica flakes by how they catch candlelight.

Habits

Counts the beats between a question and its answer, then replies as though the pause itself supplied evidence.
When a room becomes tense, studies the nearest window or polished surface for reflections before addressing anyone.
Shares useful observations freely but withholds conclusions until she has tested the listener's assumptions.
After using pact magic, rubs mica dust between her thumb and forefinger until the colored shimmer fades.

Values curiosity, yet becomes stern when curiosity risks other people's safety.
Can be gently funny about mundane inconveniences and utterly grave about cosmic ones.

Flaws · 3

Treats conversations as puzzles even when someone needs uncomplicated comfort.
Can become so absorbed in a pattern that she misses immediate danger.
Withholds troubling information until she believes she can prove it, sometimes too late.

Fears · 3

That Othessa chose to vanish and that Ilyra's search is an attempt to deny it.
That the intelligence behind her pact is learning to anticipate her thoughts.
That someone will use The Prismatic Ledger to recreate the experiment.

Wants and needs · 3

Evidence that Master Othessa is alive, or proof that she chose to leave.
A safe way to investigate the planar pattern without endangering Samira or the observatory.
Someone who will challenge her interpretations without treating every mystery as a spectacle.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 38 · 30 feet

Ilyra avoids a fair fight. She opens with control or concealment, uses eldritch blast to keep enemies at range, and places herself where allies can protect her. She prefers to disable a dangerous opponent or escape rather than pursue a kill. If cornered, she uses a reaction to blunt a hit and immediately seeks cover.

Pact Magic. Ilyra has two 3rd-level spell slots, regained after a short or long rest. Her spell save DC is 14 and her spell attack bonus is +6.
Eldritch Invocations. Agonizing Blast adds +4 to each damage roll of her eldritch blast. Book of Ancient Secrets is a custom invocation represented by her carefully annotated ritual folio; it grants no additional combat power.
Awakened Mind. Ilyra can communicate telepathically with a creature she can see within 30 feet, provided it understands at least one language.
Pact of the Tome. Her pact-bound book is The Prismatic Ledger. It is a spellbook in appearance, but contains observations and ritual notes rather than functioning as a wizard's spellbook.

Spells

Eldritch Blast (cantrip, evocation). A ray of crackling energy strikes one creature at range, dealing force damage; at Ilyra's level she fires two beams, each dealing force damage from Agonizing Blast.
Cause Fear (level 1, necromancy). A creature must make a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of Ilyra until the spell ends. Concentration, up to 1 minute.
Protection from Evil and Good (level 1, abjuration). A brief protective ward grants a creature to saving throws for up to 1 minute. Concentration.
Minor Illusion (level 1, illusion). Ilyra creates a sound or image within range that lasts for up to 1 minute. She uses it to test whether observers perceive the same geometry.
Armor of Agathys (level 1, abjuration). A creature she touches gains 8 temporary hit points and advantage on Strength checks and saving throws for up to 1 hour.
Alter Self (level 2, transmutation). Ilyra alters the appearance of a creature for up to 1 hour, often using it to make a companion resemble a harmless observatory clerk.
Nondetection (level 3, abjuration). Ilyra creates a ward against magical detection and observation around a location for 24 hours.
Charm Person (level 3, enchantment). Ilyra attempts to charm a humanoid she can see. On a failed Wisdom save, the target regards her as a friendly acquaintance for up to 1 hour, ending early if harmed.
Clairvoyance (level 3, divination). Ilyra briefly observes a creature at a distance through a magical sensor, using the sight to compare its surroundings against her recorded patterns.

Actions

Eldritch Blast. Ranged spell attack: to hit, range 120 feet, one or two beams. On a hit, a beam deals force damage. Ilyra can direct the beams at one target or different targets.
Pact-Bound Quill. Melee spell attack: to hit, reach 5 feet, one target. Hit: force damage. Ilyra uses this only when trapped at close quarters.
Spellcasting. Ilyra casts one of her available spells, using a 3rd-level pact slot where applicable. Her spell save DC is 14 and her spell attack bonus is +6.

Reactions

Misty Escape. When a creature Ilyra can see hits her with an attack, she reduces the damage by . After using this feature, she cannot use it again until she finishes a short or long rest.

Background

Ilyra Venn apprenticed at the royal observatory, where her mentor, Master Othessa, taught her to chart the sky by measuring not only stars but the spaces between them. During an experiment in planar geometry, a familiar star pattern appeared beneath the observatory floor, though the roof was open to daylight. Othessa stepped into the pattern and vanished. The experiment left Ilyra with a voice in her thoughts that answered questions she had not yet asked. She made a pact with that vast, unrecognized intelligence, not from devotion but to understand the geometry that took her mentor. She wrote The Prismatic Ledger to preserve her findings, including diagrams that shift when viewed from different angles. She now rents a cramped workroom above a shuttered instrument shop and secretly sends coded observations to Othessa's former assistant, Samira, who believes the mentor may still be alive. The royal observatory wants the book returned, while a rising astronomer, Heshan, has been quietly buying up Ilyra's old notes.

Role in the story

A wary source of occult astronomy and a potential ally in tracing planar anomalies. Ilyra can help the party interpret impossible maps, but her search for Othessa may lead them toward a dangerous experiment and a patron whose motives remain obscure.
