At the table

Voice

A dry, breath-conditioned voice with a soft rasp from years of speaking over cave echoes and mineral dust. He takes a small, audible intake before names he has only read, as if testing whether the sound belongs in the room. His words carry clearly without shouting, and the ends of sentences often trail into a listening pause.

His speech is precise and densely qualified, shaped by years of reading inscriptions aloud and recording observations in echoing caverns. He often pauses to test how a word returns from the walls. When excited, he stacks clauses rapidly and has to backtrack to separate evidence from speculation. When frightened, his sentences become short, practical instructions.

Speech patterns

Begins explanations with a concrete observation, then offers two competing interpretations.
Uses phrases such as "That is a promising coincidence" when he suspects a pattern but lacks proof.
Asks permission to examine objects, but sometimes begins describing them before the answer arrives.
When he is certain, he cites the exact page, tablet, or chamber where the evidence came from.

How to play them

Approach him with a specific question, a trustworthy account of a ruin, or a practical offer to share an expedition's risks. He responds warmly to careful observation and respect for local traditions. If pressed about Thir'Nosh, he asks what the questioner intends to do with the answer before sharing his notes.

Goal

Reach the heart of Thir'Nosh, identify the source of its returning pulse, and learn whether the mechanism is connected to the origin of Rootcore crystals.

Motivation

He wants to understand the ancient powers beneath the world without allowing discovery to become another disaster for the people living above them.

Appearance

Beleran is a dark-haired Qumon with dark ashen skin, clear blue eyes, polished horns, and a devilish tail. A blue aura gathers close to him like cold light seen through deep water, strongest around his hands and the edges of his horns. His horns are smooth and meticulously polished, with faint rings where he has wrapped them in cloth during long climbs. He moves with a careful, forward-leaning gait, tail counterbalancing every step over broken stone. His unexpected distinction is his fastidious grooming: even after a wet cave crossing, he will stop to comb his hair and clean grit from his horns before opening a book. He leaves the impression of a walking library that has learned to watch the ceiling.

Clothing

A high-collared, slate-colored travel coat with many stitched inner pockets, a waxed hood, layered wraps around his forearms, and climbing boots with replaceable grips. His belts are crowded with book straps, chalk, and small labeled cases.

Body language

He angles his head as if listening to a distant drip, keeps one hand on a bookstrap, and uses his tail to test the air behind him in cramped passages. When fascinated, he forgets to blink. When frightened, he squares his books against his chest like a shield.

Distinguishing features

A close blue aura that catches on wet stone and crystal facets.
Polished horns with faint cloth-wrapping rings near their bases.
A long, expressive devilish tail that counterbalances him on narrow ledges.
An unusually extensive collection of books, packed into strapped cases and carried before nearly anything else.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Beleran is generous with explanations but guarded with conclusions. In a quiet archive he is patient, even playful, and gladly follows a question far past its practical use. In the field he becomes brisk and controlling, assigning tasks as if every delay might wake the stone. When guilt surfaces, he talks more and listens less. He is adventurous enough to enter an uncharted passage, yet insists on writing down the route so nobody has to follow him blindly.

Alignment
Curious and generally compassionate, but willing to trespass or deceive when he believes a discovery could prevent a greater loss.

Quirks

Taps his staff exactly three times before entering a passage he has never seen.
Labels book pages with tiny drawings of the weather he remembers from the day he wrote them.
Apologizes to stalactites when he bumps them, then checks them for cracks.
Turns his books upside down when trying to remember a fact, claiming the unfamiliar angle shakes loose the thought.
Uses his tail to hold open a page while both hands are occupied, even when a strap or clip would be easier.

Habits

Counts new chambers by tapping the walking staff against the floor, then writes the number in the margin of whichever book is nearest.
When discussing a deity, checks the room for echoes before saying its name.
In danger, first protects his books, then himself, and afterward is ashamed of that order.
After a disagreement, returns with a relevant passage rather than an apology, though he usually means both.

Traits · 4

Eager to share what he knows, reluctant to admit what he only suspects.
Cautious about physical danger, reckless about unanswered questions.
Respectful toward sincere religious practice, but impatient with anyone using tradition to forbid all inquiry.
Protective of companions in an emergency, then apologetic about the risks he led them into.

Flaws · 3

Treats a compelling mystery as more urgent than the practical needs of the people beside him.
Can become defensive when someone dismisses old beliefs as superstition, even when the evidence is uncertain.
Carries too many books and resists abandoning them even when speed matters.

Fears · 3

That the pulse beneath Thir'Nosh is not a dormant machine but a mind that has noticed him.
That he will again be forced to choose between preserving knowledge and saving someone in immediate danger.
That Doru's survival has become an excuse Beleran uses to keep taking needless risks.

Wants and needs · 3

A trustworthy expedition partner who will tell him when curiosity is becoming recklessness.
A safe way to monitor the pulse beneath Thir'Nosh without disturbing it.
Doru's honest judgment, even though he fears hearing it.

Combat

HP 48 · 30 feet per round on ordinary ground; custom Generic Fantasy estimate, with movement reduced at the GM's discretion on slick or unstable cave surfaces.

Keeps distance, uses Blue Wake Lance to mark dangerous targets, and uses Margin Bind to stop a pursuer long enough to retreat behind cover. He avoids fighting in unstable tunnels and will spend a turn rescuing a companion or securing his books if he believes the battlefield is about to collapse.

Custom feature, Blue Wake. His aura is visible in darkness and clings to nearby surfaces like drifting underwater light. Once per scene, he can use it to mark a safe route through a familiar cave or expose a concealed magical trace.
Custom feature, Rootcore Attunement. By touching a Rootcore crystal, he can sense whether it is dormant, recently disturbed, or resonating with an ancient mechanism. This does not reveal its purpose or make it safe.
Custom feature, Prepared Scholar. If he has had time to consult his books, he can offer a useful clue about ancient ruins, Deepways ecology, or forgotten deities. The clue may be incomplete or costly to verify.

Actions

Blue Wake Lance. Custom Generic Fantasy action. Ranged magical attack, 30-foot reach: a lance of blue force. On a successful attack, it deals force damage. The target is briefly outlined in blue light, making it easier to track in darkness until the end of the next round.
Margin Bind. Custom Generic Fantasy action. He snaps open a prepared folio and releases a burst of binding script at one nearby creature. On a successful attack, it deals force damage and holds the target in place until the end of its next turn, unless it succeeds on a reasonable resistance check.
Staff Strike. Custom Generic Fantasy action. He swings his iron-shod walking staff at a creature within reach. On a successful attack, it deals bludgeoning damage.

Services they sell

Can interpret many ancient inscriptions, with time and adequate reference material.
Can help plan routes through mapped Deepways caves and identify common environmental hazards.
Can assess whether a Rootcore crystal appears dormant or recently disturbed, though not whether it is safe.

Rewards they can give

A reliable annotated map of a section of the Deepways, if he trusts the party.
A copied inscription or carefully reasoned account of a local deity.
A small Rootcore sample, only if the party helps establish that it can be handled safely.

Equipment

  • Traveling library (books and research)A reinforced pack and linked book cases containing field journals, copied inscriptions, devotional fragments, and practical cave guides. The load is cumbersome and contains more books than any other possession.
  • Surveyor's staff (tool and weapon)A stout staff with an iron foot, useful for testing ground and for striking in a desperate fight.
  • Deepways survey kit (exploration gear)A hooded lamp, spare wicks, chalk, climbing line, pitons, waxed paper, and small mineral sample cases.
  • Sealed Rootcore fragment (arcane research)A thumb-sized Rootcore fragment sealed in a padded, rune-marked case. It is a research sample, not a reliable power source.

Possessions

A large collection of field books and copied manuscripts
A hand-drawn map of the known Deepways routes
A waxed-paper notebook holding his private Thir'Nosh observations
A pressed surface-world sprig hidden in a book on fungi
A polished horn comb

Background

Beleran was raised among Qumon surveyors who mapped passages between humid tunnels and the crystalline caverns of the Deepways. As a child, he treated every cave mark as a sentence and every mineral seam as punctuation. His first expedition, at thirteen, ended when a Rootcore crystal resonated beneath an old shrine and triggered a collapse. He heard his mentor, Doru, trapped beyond the fall, but could not move the stone. Beleran spent the night reading aloud from a water-damaged prayer tablet to keep Doru answering from the other side. Doru survived, though one leg never healed properly. That night changed Beleran from a collector of explanations into a scholar who believes knowledge must be carried where it can help. Now level 10 by the custom Generic Fantasy scale used in this record, he travels between settlements studying ruins, cave ecologies, and ancient deities. He has exchanged cautious notes with the reclusive Zuciver Onemite and once negotiated a passage with the Whispering Woe Naga. His current problem is a growing pulse beneath Thir'Nosh, the ancient machine womb where the Qhacret say the first Mage-Forged Guardian was born. Beleran suspects the pulse is part of a planetary intelligence, but every new resonance makes his blue aura brighter and his books harder to keep still.

Role in the story

A knowledgeable expedition ally whose research can open routes into ancient sites while drawing the party toward a potentially world-spanning mystery. His caution, ambition, and hidden contact with the Thir'Nosh pulse can make him a valuable guide or an unwitting catalyst.

From their background
Faction
Qumon by heritage; an independent scholar who trades notes with the Qhacret but does not speak for them.

Known connections

Doru, his former mentor and closest friend, survived the expedition collapse but now walks with a brace. Doru thinks Beleran takes too many risks to prove that night mattered.
Zuciver Onemite, the reclusive Deepways scholar, has allowed Beleran to study several fragments but refuses to discuss their origin.
The Whispering Woe Naga knows a route to Thir'Nosh and has warned Beleran that the machine womb is beginning to answer questions.
The Qhacret preserve stories of the first Mage-Forged Guardian and distrust outsiders who treat those stories as mere engineering records.
