At the table

“It is necessary. Those are not the same thing.”
From how they speak

Voice

His voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from years of speaking over river wind and crowded chambers. He articulates names with care and gives important terms a firm, squared-off finish. At dinner he can sound welcoming without becoming theatrical; when angered, he speaks more directly and stops cushioning his point with courtly phrases.

He speaks in clear, measured phrases, using the clipped precision of a former clerk and the direct vocabulary of a river worker. He gives dates, names, and practical consequences rather than leaning on courtly ornament. When grief breaks through his discipline, his sentences become shorter and more blunt.

Speech patterns

Frames offers in terms of what is known, what is uncertain, and what can be promised.
Asks, "What would make this worth the risk to you?" before bargaining over a reward.
Uses plain language in private and carefully chosen formal phrasing when speaking in the king's name.
Corrects anyone who calls the quest safe: "It is necessary. Those are not the same thing."

How to play them

Welcome the guests with courtesy, then speak candidly once the first course is served. Explain the quest's known dangers, offer a negotiable reward, and let the guests challenge the terms. If they distrust the crown, acknowledge why without demanding their loyalty. If they ask about the missing dispatch's contents, admit that he does not know the full truth.

Goal

Recruit a trustworthy expedition to recover the missing royal dispatch before it can be taken or destroyed, then decide what truth the king must hear.

Motivation

Make royal promises precise enough that people can act on them, and keep Arathen from sliding into a war built on concealed mistakes.

Appearance

Ulf is a broad, middle-aged man with a face made for looking attentive across a crowded room: heavy brows, a square jaw, and deep creases at the corners of his mouth. His skin has the ruddy, wind-chapped texture of someone who spent his youth outdoors before court life claimed him. His hair is dark brown threaded with iron gray, cut close at the sides and brushed forward when it refuses to lie flat. He moves with measured economy, turning his whole body toward whoever speaks rather than merely glancing over. A small, unexpected detail for the king's polished spokesman: he keeps a sprig of dried marsh-mint tucked into his breast pocket, and sometimes rubs it between thumb and forefinger when weighing a lie.

Clothing

A dark green court coat, carefully brushed but plainly mended at one cuff with thread a shade too light. His brass buttons are polished; his boots are practical and scuffed. A blue wool scarf, visibly over-cared-for and neatly folded, is his one indulgence.

Body language

He angles his chair so he can see both the door and the people at the table. When listening, he rests one thumb against the edge of his signet ring. He does not fidget broadly, but the ring turns a fraction whenever someone says the king's name.

A pale, neatly repaired patch on one coat cuff that does not quite match the fabric.
His brass signet ring turns slightly under his thumb whenever he invokes royal authority.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Ulf is warm when someone is plainly out of their depth, but exacting when they make a promise. He enjoys a lively dinner and can laugh at himself, yet becomes stubborn when people use grand ideals to excuse practical harm. In public he is composed and deliberate; among trusted company he is more openly grieving and occasionally sharp.

Alignment
Lawful and pragmatic, though his loyalty is to the people of Arathen as much as to its crown

Quirks

Turns his signet ring a fraction whenever he says the king's name.
Rubs the dried marsh-mint in his pocket when deciding whether someone is being honest.
Folds used napkins into tiny boats while listening to long speeches.
Tests a chair's stability with one discreet push before sitting.
Keeps a list of promises he has made and checks it before bed.

Habits

Checks the wax seal on his commission whenever someone mentions the king's authority.
Keeps the dinner moving by asking each guest a direct, practical question rather than making a toast.
When a guest is frightened, he offers a specific choice instead of vague reassurance.
After an argument, he returns to the disputed point later, having made notes on a folded napkin.

Traits · 3

He wants to believe people can be persuaded, but prepares for the moment they cannot.
He is proud of his work and distrustful of ceremony that hides its consequences.
He can be generous with time while being painfully strict about wording.

Flaws · 3

Treats uncertainty as a problem to be managed, sometimes leaving little room for grief or moral hesitation.
Withholds troubling information until he has verified it, even when others deserve to know sooner.
Can mistake a well-structured bargain for a fair one.

Fears · 3

That a vague order or careless promise will again cost innocent lives.
That the missing dispatch will reveal that the king knowingly endangered border villages.
That he has become so practiced at serving the crown that he no longer notices when it is wrong.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs capable people willing to recover the missing dispatch.
Wants the party to understand the dangers before accepting the commission.
Needs to learn whether the dispatch implicates the king before deciding what to do with it.
Wants a reason to believe his work can protect people rather than merely protect the crown.

Combat

HP 5

Ulf is a spokesman, not a battle-hardened adversary. He tries to get between danger and the guests, calls for guards, and fights only to escape or protect someone who cannot flee. His short sword is a last resort.

Custom feature, King's Writ. Once per negotiation, Ulf can present a sealed royal commission. A character who accepts the commission gains a concrete claim to the king's promised reward, but the writ also identifies them to Arathen's officials.
Custom feature, A Table Is a Treaty. While hosting a formal meal, Ulf can name one subject as the evening's business. Guests who continue discussing it in good faith receive a private audience with him after dinner, even if they disagree.

Actions

Short Sword. Custom combat action: Ulf strikes with his short sword. On a successful attack, deal physical damage. This is a simple custom profile, not a claim about an official Daggerheart adversary stat block.
Make the Offer. Custom social action: Ulf states the king's offer plainly, including its cost and reward. He will not promise what he cannot authorize, and he invites the guests to name the risk they find unacceptable.

Reactions

Give Them the Floor. Custom reaction: When someone at the dinner is being spoken over, Ulf interrupts the current speaker and gives the overlooked person the floor. This is a roleplaying cue, not a mechanical reaction claimed as canonical.

Services they sell

Can arrange a royal audience for the party.
Can provide travel warrants and introductions to Arathen's officials.
Can negotiate payment and clarify the legal authority granted by the commission.

Rewards they can give

A royal reward of 150 gold pieces per person on successful return, subject to negotiation.
A signed travel warrant granting access to Arathen's roads, ferries, and ordinary provisions.
A future audience with the king for the expedition's survivors.

Equipment

A pocket notebook of appointments and promises
A brass signet ring
A blue wool scarf
Dried marsh-mint from his childhood home

Background

Ulf grew up in a river hamlet where his mother kept ferry records and his father repaired floodgates. He learned early that a badly worded promise could leave a whole village stranded. At twenty-three, he carried a royal evacuation order during the spring inundation; a captain delayed acting because the order did not specify who could requisition boats. The delay cost lives, including Ulf's younger sister. He entered royal service afterward, first as a clerk, then as a negotiator determined to make every promise actionable. Now he speaks for the king of Arathen and is hosting a dinner to recruit capable strangers for a dangerous quest: recover a missing royal dispatch from the reed-choked ruins of a watch-station before rival claimants find it. His widowed mother, Sella, still lives upriver and writes him blunt letters about the villages his policies overlook. His closest court ally, Dame Heshara, believes the dispatch could prevent a border war; Ulf suspects it may instead expose the king's part in provoking one. His immediate problem is that the dinner's guest list includes a palace informant, and he does not know which guest it is.

Role in the story

Quest-giver, court representative, and a potential source of uncomfortable truths about the crown. He can be an ally if the characters value candor over obedience.
