Mara Venn
Mara Venn
At the table
Voice
Her voice is a dry, carrying rasp, with a little gravel from years of calling instructions into river wind. Consonants land cleanly and firmly; vowels flatten under urgency. She can project across a wet dock without shouting herself hoarse, and her laugh is a short, surprised bark that sometimes catches even her off guard.
Mara speaks in short, work-shaped sentences, often giving a measurement or direction before an explanation. She uses the clipped shorthand of someone accustomed to being heard over wind, rope strain, and dock noise. Her metaphors tend to come from currents, knots, and cargo. When she is angry, her words get sharper and more numerous, like someone laying out evidence; she does not lower her voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Mara begins by asking what the party can actually do, what equipment they need, and how soon they can act. She gives clear information about the wreck, the river, and the urgency, but initially keeps her guilt about the Long Thaw private. Competence earns her trust; boastfulness does not. If the party proposes a dangerous crossing, she challenges the plan with concrete questions rather than forbidding it outright. Once convinced they understand the risks, she supports them with boats, ropes, local knowledge, and whatever crew she can spare.
Goal
Restore a reliable ferry crossing before the far bank's food and medicine spoil, without repeating the fatal mistake of obeying a bad order over her own judgment.
Motivation
To make the crossing safe enough that no one has to choose between obeying an order and saving a life.
Appearance
Mara Venn has a compact, weather-braced presence, as if she has spent years leaning into wind that never quite lets up. Salt has roughened the skin at her temples and left pale, dry crescents at the edges of her nostrils. Her dark hair is braided close to her scalp and pinned beneath a wool cap, but short coils escape at the nape. She wears a brass tide whistle on a cord, polished bright where her thumb rubs its mouthpiece and green with age in the grooves. In a crowded room her eyes travel first to doors, windows, and the nearest visible waterline, rarely settling on a face until she has counted the exits. She walks with a sailor's careful, rolling balance, even on dry boards, and leaves behind the impression of a person who has already noticed what is about to go wrong.
Clothing
A patched, tar-dark wool coat over a coarse linen shirt, work trousers tucked into high river boots, a belt carrying a knife and small tools, and a thick cap pulled low against spray. The cuffs are stiff with old salt.
Body language
She plants her feet as if the floor may move, keeps one hand near the tide whistle, and glances past speakers toward exits and the water. When listening closely, she tilts her head slightly as though measuring the current by sound. A rare smile arrives abruptly and disappears just as fast.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesMara is decisive when a boat is in danger and stubbornly careful when there is time to think. She has a dry, generous humor with tired workers, but becomes clipped and overbearing when someone treats the river as scenery. She wants people to trust her judgment, yet distrusts her own instincts whenever a decision resembles the one she made during the Long Thaw. In private she is tender toward children and the injured; in public she hides that tenderness behind lists, schedules, and blunt orders.

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Mara is a commoner, not a trained warrior. She avoids a fair fight, uses the boat hook to keep enemies at reach, and tries to put railings, crates, or other people between herself and danger. She directs allies toward cover and escape routes, and will risk herself to get trapped civilians clear. She does not pursue fleeing opponents.

Background
Mara was raised around Bellwether Quay's ferry sheds, the daughter of a rope-maker who taught her to tell a sound line from a doomed one by touch. At nineteen, she took a place on the river ferry and learned the crossing by its smells, eddies, and shifting banks. During the flood known locally as the Long Thaw, she followed her captain's order to hold the boat at the near bank while the current rose. A second boat, carrying her younger brother and several stranded families, broke loose and vanished downstream. Mara survived, but she has never forgiven herself for obeying an order instead of trusting her own reading of the water. She became harbormaster to keep such decisions from being made carelessly. Now the ferry route to the far bank is blocked by a wrecked barge and a fresh, unpredictable current. Food and medicine are spoiling across the river. Mara has hired the party because the quay crews are exhausted, the available boats are too small for the job, and she cannot spare the few steady hands needed to keep the town supplied. She is in a running dispute with the local grain factor over who should pay for the salvage, and she still sends a small portion of every wage to her brother's surviving daughter, who believes her father died on a different stretch of river.
Role in the story
Questgiver for The Seventh Crossing. Mara hires the party to clear or bypass the wreck blocking the ferry route so food and medicine can reach the far bank before they spoil. She can provide local knowledge, working equipment, and a difficult choice about how much risk to accept.

- Faction
- Harbormaster of Bellwether Quay; her authority is municipal and practical, not military.
