Voice

A clear, forward voice with a dry rasp at the ends of long sentences, shaped by years of calling orders across wind and field gear. His speech is practical and image-rich; under pressure, his words become shorter and more exact.

He speaks in a clear, forward voice shaped by years of projecting orders over wind, gear, and frightened people. There is a dry rasp at the ends of long sentences, likely from dust and cold field air. His phrasing is practical and image-rich, often using terrain as a metaphor; when angry, he becomes more direct and more specific rather than louder.

Speech patterns

Gives orders in short, practical clauses, then adds a human detail such as who is carrying the spare lantern.
Uses dry humor to puncture fear, never to mock a frightened subordinate.
When discussing the Ashlands, names specific stones, smells, and routes rather than speaking in grand abstractions.
Calls the Sting by name only when he means to make a threat unmistakable.

How to play them

Felix starts by treating visitors as possible allies, asking what they need and what they know about the terrain. He respects competence more than rank, but watches how people treat subordinates. If approached about the Beholders, he tests the visitor with a small, verifiable detail before trusting them. A threat to his squad ends the interview.

Goal

Keep 3 Squadron alive, secure a truthful account of the Ashlands, and make sure the kingdom's next map does not turn a survivable route into an invitation for an army.

Motivation

Felix wants his squad to come back with their people, their evidence, and their judgment intact. He believes the truth about the Ashlands belongs to those who survived them, not only to the Crown's mapmakers.

Appearance

Felix is a rangy, tawny tabaxi whose coat is short and rough along the shoulders, with dark rosettes that break into narrow stripes down his flanks. He moves with a scout's low, economical precision, then turns that stillness into a sudden, unnerving lunge. His long tail keeps time with his attention, ticking like a metronome when he studies a map. A battered guitar rides high on his back, its varnish worn pale where his shoulder rubs it. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny knitted mouse tucked in the breast pocket of his immaculate officer's coat, carefully mended with green thread.

Clothing

An emerald-and-black Royal Research and Recon Corp coat with a high collar, reinforced elbows, and repairs made so neatly they almost disappear. The right cuff is polished from constant contact with his rapier hilt. He wears high black boots, a field harness, and the squad's insignia; his old guitar is strapped across his back.

Body language

Felix stands at a slight angle to people, leaving a clear path behind him as a scout would. His ears swivel independently toward sounds, while his tail gives away impatience before his face does. In command, he plants his boots and holds eye contact. When privately troubled, he rubs the worn patch on his guitar strap with one thumb.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Felix is warm enough to make a frightened recruit feel included, yet alert enough to notice who is exploiting that warmth. In camp he is expansive, teasing, and happy to let others take the story; in a crisis he becomes crisp and exact, with no room for banter. He admires discipline but distrusts blind obedience, and his charm is both sincere affection and a tool he knows how to use.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

He taps a five-beat rhythm on his thigh whenever someone says the word 'safe.'
He leaves the last bite of every meal untouched until the youngest person at the table has finished.
He names his crystals by their flaws: the cloudy one is 'Sunday,' the chipped one is 'Short Measure.'
He folds maps into the same compact shape even when they are not his.
He occasionally addresses his guitar as if it were an uncooperative junior officer.

Habits

Before a risky order, he checks that every person in the squad has heard it, then asks one junior member to repeat the plan back.
After combat he makes a quick count of the living before checking the dead.
He uses jokes to lower tension, but stops joking abruptly when someone is actually in danger.
When he cannot sleep, he repairs the same loose guitar peg rather than admit he is worried.

Traits · 4

He learns the names of the newest and lowest-ranked members of a squad before memorizing the officers' titles.
He delights in a clever plan, but will abandon it without vanity when the facts change.
He is generous with praise in public and careful with criticism in private.
When someone calls him a hero, he redirects the credit to whoever carried the wounded.

Flaws · 3

He takes responsibility for other people's choices until he is exhausted and resentful.
He sometimes disguises a refusal as a joke, leaving others unsure whether he is serious.
His need to keep the squad together makes him slow to reveal information that could damage their trust.

Fears · 3

That his squad will obey a disastrous order because they trust him to make it safe.
That the Beholders' testimony about the Ashlands will be used to justify another conquest.
That he will someday mistake a clever speech for a real solution.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs time to verify the next Ashlands survey before his squad is committed.
Wants his soldiers to trust one another without depending on him to settle every disagreement.
Needs to decide whether preserving the Beholders' testimony is worth risking his commission.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 38 · 30 ft., climb 20 ft.

Felix fights as a mobile officer, not a duelist seeking a fair contest. He uses the Sting to threaten the enemy's most dangerous combatant, then shifts position with Blade Flourish to protect himself or reach a better angle. He spends Bardic Inspiration to keep allies standing and uses control spells to break enemy coordination. He charges a Sting crystal only when the situation warrants it, preferring to keep its elemental tricks hidden until an opponent commits.

Cure Wounds (level 1, evocation). A creature Felix touches regains hit points. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
Charm Person (level 1, enchantment). A creature within 60 feet that can hear Felix must succeed on a Wisdom save or be charmed for up to 1 minute. Felix can affect up to three creatures with one casting.
Minor Illusion (cantrip, illusion). Felix creates a sound or image within range that lasts up to 1 minute and fits within a 5-foot cube.
Detect Thoughts (level 2, divination). Felix creates an invisible magical sensor within range that can see and hear. He can perceive through it while using his action to do so.

Enhance Ability (level 1, transmutation). Felix grants a creature he touches advantage on its next ability check of one chosen ability before the spell ends.

Actions

The Sting. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage, or while Dueling applies. Felix can use one Sting crystal per hit, adding damage of its type. The Sting is a custom magic weapon; its crystal damage is not an official D&D feature.
Extra Attack. Felix makes two Sting attacks.
Vicious Mockery. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: psychic damage. The target hears a disorienting phrase only it can hear.
Field Refrain (custom). Felix plays a brisk, steadying phrase. One creature within 60 feet that can hear him regains hit points. A creature can benefit from this feature once per short rest.

Reactions

Defensive Flourish. When a creature Felix can see hits him with a melee attack, he can expend a Bardic Inspiration die to add the number rolled to his AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. If it misses, Felix can move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Cutting Encouragement. When an ally Felix can see within 60 feet fails an ability check or attack roll, Felix can use his reaction to expend one use of Bardic Inspiration and let the ally add the die to the roll, potentially turning failure into success.

Background

Felix De-Jure grew up among ferry crews on the western edge of the Nortwein Kingdom, where his mother taught him to read weather from water and his father taught him that a confident order can keep frightened people moving. He enlisted in the Royal Research and Recon Corp after guiding a lost patrol home through a flooded ravine. During his first Ashlands expedition, a retreat went wrong when his commanding officer refused to abandon a sealed survey wagon. Felix disobeyed, led the survivors out, and returned alone for the officer's field journal. The officer died, but the journal revealed that the expedition's map had concealed a safe route through the ruins. Felix was promoted, and learned that duty can demand both obedience and refusal. He serves as Officer-Adjutant of 3 Squadron, smoothing quarrels between scouts, researchers, and soldiers while privately keeping contact with the Beholders of the Ashes, a circle of bards who witnessed the Ashlands. His closest confidante is his former patrol partner, Sergeant Sesa, who thinks his late-night absences are about gambling. Felix is currently trying to stop his superiors from sending his squad into an unstable ruin before the survey is complete.

Role in the story

A charismatic field commander who can guide the party through hostile territory, become a complicated military ally, or put them in contact with suppressed Ashlands testimony. His loyalties are real but divided between his squad, the Crown, and the people whose history the Crown is recording.

Known connections

Sergeant Sesa, a patient veteran and Felix's former patrol partner, believes he is hiding a personal debt rather than a secret society.
Captain Heshi, commander of 3 Squadron, trusts Felix's judgment but resents his habit of questioning orders in front of the squad.
His mother, Tashi, still runs a ferry crossing and sends him weather notes disguised as family letters.
The Beholders of the Ashes, a circle of bards and Ashlands witnesses, rely on Felix to carry accounts beyond official censorship.
