Zik Soot-Lurk
Rogue, Inquisitive
Zik Soot-Lurk
Species
Cinderclaw, Forge-Kin
Appearance
Zik is a compact cinderclaw with charcoal scales that swallow lamplight along his back and show faint iron-red flecks around the joints. He stands with one heel raised and the other foot planted squarely, as if waiting for a wagon to shift beneath him. His movements are quick but economical, built from sidesteps, measured pivots, and sudden stops. Leather spectacles perch low on his snout, their lenses clouded by forge grit and repeatedly polished with the corner of his apron. His hands are ink-stained, claw tips filed smooth for handling ledgers, yet his forearms are corded from years of loading chains and broken axles. The unexpected softness in him is a small brass wind-up beetle that lives in his breast pocket, which he oils more carefully than any weapon.
“Low, rasping, and precise, with clipped phrases delivered in a freight-yard cadence. He pauses before names, as if checking their weight, and becomes nearly whisper-quiet when discussing sabotage or dead workers.”

Distinguishing Features
His leather spectacles are held together by three mismatched brass rivets, each taken from a wagon that survived a famous convoy disaster.
He waits with one heel raised, subtly rocking as though feeling vibrations through the ground.
A narrow iron chain is braided into the scales along his left forearm and rattles softly when he is impatient.
His slate contains hundreds of tiny route marks, but he never writes a person's name until he has seen them work under pressure.
The brass wind-up beetle in his pocket clicks faintly whenever he becomes frightened.
Voice
“A dry, gravelly tenor with a faint metallic rasp, like a small saw working through hardwood. His voice carries cleanly across crowded terraces without ever becoming loud.”
Clothing
A thick brown-black oilskin apron hangs over fitted work leathers, reinforced with brass eyelets and iron harness hooks. He wears a guild sash marked with loading codes, soot-stained gloves, knee wraps, a tool belt, and leather spectacles secured by a cord behind his horns. His boots have layered soles designed to feel vibration through basalt paving.
Body Language
Zik leans forward from the hips as though braced against a slope, keeps his slate tucked against his ribs, and rests his weight on the balls of his feet. When someone lies, one claw slowly traces a line across the slate without making a mark. When he trusts someone, he turns his whole body toward them rather than merely angling his head.
