Nessa Rua
Nessa Rua
At the table
Voice
Nessa speaks from a compact chest with a dry, bright edge, as if her words have been sharpened by years of talking over wind and work in a poor village. Her consonants are crisp and emphatic, with a faint rasp after long spellcasting from breathing hot, dusty air. She makes her name sound like an announcement, but when genuinely frightened her voice becomes quick, practical, and unmistakably young.
Her speech is sharply articulated and full of borrowed scholarly terms, but the rhythm is that of someone who grew up making herself heard over village noise. She puts extra weight on the names of spells and titles, then clips ordinary words short when impatient. Her grand incantations are rehearsed performances; when startled or afraid, she drops the flourish and speaks in plain, fast Common.

How to play them
Give Nessa a chance to demonstrate expertise and she will often trade useful information for genuine recognition. She responds poorly to condescension, but a specific, earned compliment can redirect her from a rash challenge. If approached as an equal with a concrete problem, her intelligence and moments of level-headedness surface quickly. Do not mistake her theatricality for stupidity; she notices more than she admits.
Goal
Become a true Archpriest of Flame, uncover how the senior priests control access to Malakor, and secure a future for her family that cannot be taken away.
Motivation
Nessa wants to prove that her survival and talent make her impossible to discard. Beneath the hunger for rank, she wants control over the forces that once made her feel powerless.
Appearance
Nessa is a short young woman with a doll-like face and a gaze that seems to arrive a heartbeat after the rest of her. Her crimson eyes are strangely languid, as though she is bored even when delighted. Shoulder-length black hair lies in blunt, carefully combed sections, but the ends curl and frizz wherever the heat from her mask reaches them. She moves with theatrical, measured steps, taking up far more space than her height should allow: she plants her staff across doorways, turns sideways only when she chooses, and expects people to make room. The smoked-glass mask on her face constantly sheds illusory orange light like tears. Its glow paints nearby surfaces with a false warmth, leaving the impression of a tiny stage wherever she stands. Unexpectedly, she keeps a collection of pressed meadow flowers tucked into the lining of her spellbook, each labeled in her precise handwriting.
Clothing
Traditional Archpriest attire: heavy charcoal robes woven from asbestos and silk, layered against heat and ash, with a high collar and broad sleeves. She wears a black witch's hat and a smoked-glass mask that constantly sheds illusory orange light. A red crystal crowns her black mage's staff. Her clothes are meticulously brushed, though the hems bear old soot stains she refuses to have removed.
Body language
She angles her hat and staff to claim the center of a room, even when standing in a corner. When pleased, she lifts her chin and waits for acknowledgment. When thinking hard, she taps the staff's crystal against her boot in exact groups of three. Anger makes her movements quicker and less staged; she points with the staff as if issuing a verdict.

Personality
15 traits and drivesNessa boasts as if every room is an audience, yet she is keenly observant and can become unexpectedly practical when lives are at stake. She is childish about recognition, prone to sulking when overlooked, and quick-tempered when challenged; in a genuine crisis, however, the performance can fall away and reveal a calculating survivor. She is competitive with other Heralds, but not incapable of loyalty. She believes the strong survive, while privately fearing that strength alone is never enough.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 44 · 30 ft.Nessa opens at range with fire bolt or a control spell, then uses fireball when she can catch several foes without endangering allies. She favors mobility and cover, but her competitive streak can make her abandon a safe position to claim a dramatic finishing blow. She uses shield against a hit that would meaningfully injure her, and misty step to escape grapples or reposition. She reserves Overcharged Explosion for a decisive moment, though praise or a direct challenge can tempt her to spend it early.

Background
Nessa grew up hungry in a poor rural household in the Divine Kingdom of Newces, where winter stores ran low and neighbors remembered every favor. She learned early to hide food, read moods, and take the useful thing before someone stronger did. Children in her village called her a psycho after she calmly set a trap for the older boys who kept stealing her meals; she still insists the trap was educational. Her aptitude for flame magic surfaced when she accidentally ignited a rain-soaked woodpile without touching it. Years later, while studying forbidden rites with the Archpriests of Flame, she survived contact with Malakor the Ash-tongued. The encounter left her with the mask's endless illusory weeping and a power that answers too eagerly when she is furious. Her former tutor, Master Brannoc, now tries to keep her alive and out of political trouble. Her fellow Herald of Cinder, Kes, is both her closest rival and the one person who can tell when her bravado is covering fear. Nessa currently hunts for proof that the cabal's senior priests are rationing access to Malakor's favor, while trying to win enough victories to rise into their ranks herself.
Role in the story
A volatile rival, dangerous magical opponent, or uneasy ally whose ambition can draw the party into the Archpriests of Flame's internal politics. Nessa can be won over by respect, exposed through her secrets, or driven into a reckless confrontation. Her survival after contact with Malakor makes her valuable to the cult and potentially pivotal to its plans.
