Thibbledorf Pwent
Thibbledorf Pwent
At the table
Voice
A blunt, gravel-edged voice driven from the chest, with the breathy rasp of someone accustomed to dust and hot forge air. He projects across a noisy hall without seeming to shout. His name, Thibbledorf Pwent, comes out as two hard, emphatic beats, as if he were calling a charge.
His words come in a rough, chest-driven bark, shaped by years of shouting over picks, falling stone, and battle. He clips the ends off practical instructions, but when reciting the dead miners' names he enunciates each one carefully. His laughter is a short, rusty boom that often arrives before a joke has finished.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He responds best to directness, practical help, and people who protect others without demanding praise. He distrusts elaborate flattery. If the party treats Gutbuster as a person rather than a tool, he becomes more willing to share the armor's strange warnings. A reckless show of courage impresses him, but a well-planned rescue earns his deeper respect.
Goal
Discover what is waking beneath the abandoned mine and prevent another collapse, while learning whether Gutbuster is warning him or summoning him.
Motivation
To keep the living safe from the kind of catastrophe that shaped him, and to make amends for those he could not save.
Appearance
A compact, barrel-chested dwarf with the dense, balanced build of a champion wrestler. Gutbuster makes him look like a walking breach ram: broad shoulder plates end in long, outward-curving razor blades, a single spike crowns his helmet, and every knuckle is capped with iron points. He moves with startling quickness, heels barely settling before he launches into a shoulder-first rush. The armor is scored and darkened from use, but one unexpected detail catches the eye: a little brass wind-up beetle is clipped to his belt, its polished shell carefully kept brighter than any part of his armor. He smells unmistakably of hot iron, tallow, and crushed juniper; he knows about the iron, but insists the juniper is “just the mountain air.”
Clothing
He wears Gutbuster's fitted full plate over a padded charcoal gambeson, with a weather-beaten belt, spare leather straps, and a small brass wind-up beetle clipped at his hip.
Body language
He stands with his knees flexed and weight slightly forward, as if the floor were a starting line. He turns his whole armored torso toward whoever speaks, then taps one gauntlet against the opposite shoulder blade when impatient. When ashamed, he rubs the worn edge of the wind-up beetle's brass shell with a thumb.

Personality

AC 22 · HP 248 · 30 ft.He seeks the closest route to the most dangerous foe, using bursts of speed and Action Surge to crash through the front line. He knocks targets prone, pins them on his armor's spikes, and uses his body to deny enemies passage toward allies. He avoids prolonged ranged exchanges and trusts his armor to absorb punishment, though Gutbuster may urge him to pursue a fleeing enemy.

Background
Thibbledorf was raised among hard-working dwarves who valued a dependable shield wall over a glorious charge. He became a fighter anyway, drawn to the moment a line broke and someone had to hold the gap. During the defense of a mining pass, a panicked retreat left his younger cousin trapped behind a fallen gate. Thibbledorf charged back through the press, was pinned beneath a collapsed support, and survived only because a strange, half-buried suit of armor locked itself around him and dragged him clear. The armor called itself Gutbuster and has remained at his side ever since. The rescue saved his cousin, but the retreat cost the lives of several miners, and Thibbledorf still carries the guilt of being unable to reach them in time. He now trains volunteers at the old pass, sends coin to the families of the dead, and argues bitterly with his cousin, who wants him to stop treating every danger as a debt he must repay. Their settlement's abandoned mine is beginning to tremble again, and Gutbuster claims something below is calling its name.
Role in the story
A formidable ally, rival, or complication whose loyalty is unmistakable but whose appetite for direct confrontation can endanger a careful plan. His investigation into the trembling mine can connect the party to a deeper threat and to the mystery of Gutbuster's origin.
