Jaelune
Jaelune
At the table
Voice
A dry, papery rasp carries the faint glassy ring of someone who spent a lifetime listening for cracks in lamp chimneys. She forms sentences like safe working instructions, measured and clear, but excitement makes her accelerate and swallow word endings. Anger sharpens her diction rather than softening it.
Her voice has a dry, papery rasp from breathing workshop dust and old lamp smoke, with a faint glassy overtone on words containing sibilants. She speaks in carefully separated clauses, like someone accustomed to explaining dangerous procedures over the noise of a forge. When excited, she talks faster and clips the ends of words; when furious, she becomes more direct and uses names instead of titles.

How to play them
Approach Jaelune as a capable person with limits, not as an oracle. She responds well to specific questions, practical help, and honest disagreement. She is wary of anyone asking for power without naming the cost. Offering to help repair a ward or protect civilians earns her trust faster than praise.
Goal
Find and contain the growing splinter of the Cataclysm breach without sacrificing a living city to do it.
Motivation
To make magic safer and more freely understood, while resisting the temptation to control it in the name of protection.
Appearance
Jaelune looks like a traveler who has walked through a thunderstorm made of glass. Fine, pale-blue lines shift beneath her skin like slow auroras, brightening whenever nearby magic is used. Her hands are unusually broad and densely callused across the palms and fingertips, with faint geometric patterns worn into the pads as though she has spent centuries pressing runes into stone. She keeps her nails clipped to the quick and polishes them obsessively with a strip of silk. Her movements are economical and grounded until a spell is cast nearby; then her head turns first, followed a heartbeat later by the rest of her, as if listening with her whole body. The impression she leaves is of immense age held in a body that still has errands to run.
Clothing
A weatherproof, charcoal traveling coat repaired in several places with mismatched thread, over a high-necked blue tunic. A ring of tiny glass lamp chimneys hangs inside the coat where they cannot clink. Her boots are mud-stained, carefully maintained, and resoled with copper wire.
Body language
She stands with her feet planted as if bracing against a current. Her broad hands remain open and visible, often held near waist height. When she is curious, her fingers make tiny, silent shapes in the air; when she is afraid, she grips the edge of her sleeve hard enough to crease it.

Background
Before temples claimed her as a god, Jaelune was a keeper of lamps in a city whose name has been lost to aetheric storms. She learned to mend spell-lanterns, then to hear the tiny differences between a safe enchantment and one about to rupture. During the Cataclysm of Open Doors, a failed ritual tore a passage through the world's magical foundations. Jaelune entered the breach to hold it closed while the city evacuated. The breach swallowed her name, her years, and most of the city; what returned was a being threaded through with the raw substance of magic. She spent centuries worshipped as a distant divinity, but now travels in an unremarkable body, trying to understand what magic becomes when it belongs to everyone. She maintains an uneasy correspondence with the archivist Odran, who believes her memories could restore the lost city, and with the itinerant healer Bera, who reminds her that living people matter more than vanished histories. Her present problem is immediate: a splinter of the original breach has begun appearing inside ordinary spells, and she cannot close it without risking another catastrophe.
Role in the story
A powerful but limited source of magical knowledge, a possible ally against an approaching arcane disaster, and a morally complicated witness to a vanished civilization.
