Nella is a young woman with the compact, forward-leaning posture of someone who has spent years bent over a loom, yet she moves with startling softness, placing each foot as though the floor were freshly polished. Her hands are broad across the knuckles and permanently roughened by flax, but her fingers move with an almost musical precision. She has a calm, open face, a blunt chin, and a small mouth that seems perpetually on the verge of asking a practical question. Her most unexpected feature is the serene severity of her gaze.
