Drowned Bell Monastery

The drowned monks still listen for the bell that keeps their buried spirit asleep.

10 roomsan abandoned medium

The Drowned Bell Monastery is an abandoned sanctuary carved around a sacred bronze bell and now half-submerged by black groundwater. Its evacuated chambers still hold relics, records, and warnings, while a failing seal allows the bound spirit below to influence the entire floor. The safest route leads from the cracked stairwell through flooded halls and guarded portcullises to the bell crypt.

Cold mineral water laps against stone, carrying the smell of rust, wet ash, and old incense. Blue ward-light pulses beneath cracks in the floor while distant bronze groans travel through the monastery. Every surface is slick, and the flooded passages conceal movement until it is almost upon the characters.

☠ Threat

The bound spirit, called Veyr Below, dominates the bell crypt from within the cracked bronze bell. It cannot yet leave its prison, but its whispers animate water, distort memories, and turn the monastery's wards against intruders. Each disturbance weakens the seal further. If the characters fail to restore the counterweight relic or interrupt the spirit's ritual, Veyr Below will emerge as a furious subterranean entity.

History

The monastery was built by the Bellwardens, ascetics who believed a bronze bell could give form to dangerous subterranean spirits and bind them without destroying them. Generations later, miners broke into the cavern below, and a hungry presence began whispering through the foundations. The monks tried to seal it inside the bell, but the ritual flooded the lower floor, shattered the wards, and forced a desperate evacuation.

Corridor Notes

Between Room 3 and Room 5

Waterlogged murals depict robed monks lowering chains around a bell, but the painted faces have been scratched away. Several figures appear to be fleeing toward the upper stairs.

Central corridor between Room 5, Room 6, and Room 9

Rusty portcullises divide the central passage, each marked with a faded warning sigil. Raising one causes the bell crypt to answer with a single muffled toll.

Lower corridor outside Room 8 and Room 9

Thin streams of luminous water seep from cracks and flow toward the bell crypt. Touching the water produces a faint chime and briefly reveals ward-runes beneath the stone.

Side passages throughout the dungeon

Bundles of abandoned prayer cords hang from iron hooks, their knots tied around fragments of bone. Some cords twitch when the submerged predator is nearby.
