Lantern-Throne Below

When the lanterns fail above, the dark below comes collecting.

7 roomsDeep dungeon that goes to the underdark. The party is locating and escorting a supplier who has yet to return back with supplies to make important enchanted oil and wicks for lanterns that are designed to keep beasts off the streets at night. Without this supplier and supplies, less light for the town spells certain disaster for its citizens. medium

This is a buried checkpoint of stone, fungus, and old warding built to control passage into the underdark below. A missing supplier has been dragged here for leverage, and the dungeon’s masters are hoarding the enchanted oil and wicks meant to keep the town lit at night. Every room feels like a step in a deliberate defense, from the surface-facing sentry posts to the ritual threshold at the dark below.

Cold wet stone and old lamp smoke cling to every surface. The deeper chambers breathe damp air up from the underdark, carrying the stink of guano, fungus, and alchemical oil. Light is scarce and unreliable, with guttering sconces, bioluminescent moss, and black seams in the walls where something below seems to watch.

☠ Threat

A cunning underdark broker, part fungal mystic and part slaver, has turned the old customs vault into a choke point over the town’s lamp supply. The missing supplier is being held alive to maintain the enchanted oil blend and keep the warded wicks usable, while the broker threatens to flood the streets above with darkness if challenged. Worse, the boss chamber’s wards are tuned to drain light and strength from intruders who linger too long.

History

The complex began as a surface watch-post and customs vault built over a natural sinkhole that opened into the underdark. When lantern-smiths later discovered that a special oil and braided wick mixture could repel night beasts, the lower vaults were repurposed to store the formula and guard the shipments. Something beneath learned the value of light, and now uses the supplier and the stockpile as bargaining pieces.
