Heart of the Depths
Beneath the drowned stones, something listens for the sound of breaking chains.
Beneath a drowned coastal ruin lies an ancient sahuagin complex built around a sealed breach to the black ocean beyond the world. Flooded passageways, sacrificial shrines, and collapsing chambers lead toward the Heart of the Depths, where a broken seal strains to contain whatever whispers from the abyss.
Cold brine drips from every ceiling seam, carrying the stink of dead fish, wet stone, and old blood. Blue-green phosphorescence flickers across barnacled walls while distant chanting rises from below, sometimes joined by the scrape of claws on stone. The deeper chambers grow warmer, wetter, and increasingly unstable.
☠ Threat
Varkul, the Drowned Hunger, presses against the failing seal beneath the ruin. Its whispers infect the surviving sahuagin with visions of endless dominion, driving them to break the barrier even as the released pressure floods the chambers. If the seal collapses, black seawater will pour through the shaft and Varkul's influence will spread along every connected coastline.
History
The ruin was raised by the Red-Fin priesthood over a natural shaft that opened into a lightless sea beyond mortal waters. Sahuagin architects shaped the complex around the breach, using pearl, bone, and living sacrifices to bind the entity called Varkul. When rival clans fought over the prison's power, the seal was damaged, the priesthood was slaughtered, and the ruin slowly sank beneath the coast.
