Ossuary of Whispering Fog
The mist hums with the voices of those the stone has forgotten.
A sprawling subterranean burial complex defined by oppressive moisture and grand Gothic arches. Its halls are perpetually choked by a preternatural fog that masks both predators and the restless dead.
The air is frigid and smells of wet limestone and ancient copper. Thick white mist clings to the floor and rises to chest height in burial areas, while the constant sound of dripping water creates a rhythmic, heartbeat-like thrum.
☠ Threat
Lady Elara Malcorvus, the Mourning Wraith, rules the central hub. She exerts a psychic influence over the fog, using it to disorient explorers and lead them toward slippery drops or into the clutches of her drowned kin. The environment itself is a lingering threat, as the magical moisture rapidly degrades iron equipment and snuffs out non-magical flames.
History
Originally the grand resting place of the Malcorvus nobility, this ossuary was built during the peak of the Gothic Era to honor the dead. Centuries ago, a ritual meant to preserve the bodies went awry, turning the cooling dampness of the crypts into a sentient, necrotized mist. The complex was sealed to contain the vapor, but the mountain's shifting foundations have recently cracked the seals open.
Encounter Table
CRA lanky, shadow-like entity that blends perfectly into the fog.
Skeletons covered in mineral deposits that crackle as they move.
Rumours & Whispers
The fog in the Malcorvus crypts can steal the breath right out of a man's lungs.
Lady Elara was buried with a ring that can control the very mists of the valley.
A secret drainage tunnel leads from the old well in the village straight into the ossuary.
The sound of weeping in the crypts isn't the dead; it's the stone itself mourning.
