Black Ossuary
The dead are not resting below this hill, they are being made to answer.
The Black Ossuary is the cult's inner sanctum, a deeper necropolis floor where mortuary halls were hacked open and turned into a machine for summoning the dead. Its branching catacombs, flooded channels, and sacrificial chambers all feed a central engine of chains, runes, and stolen relics.
Cold air drifts up through cracked stone like a graveyard breath. The halls stink of wet bone, old incense, and lamp oil gone sour, while distant chanting echoes through flooded channels and behind sealed doors. Pale witchlight burns in wall niches, but much of the level is left in shadow, where chained relics clink and something in the dark answers the cult's calls.
☠ Threat
The cult has awakened a bound necromantic engine at the center of the sanctum, but its master ritual is fraying. A half-commanded undead entity, stitched from reliquaries, sacrificial dead, and the bones of tomb guardians, now lashes against its chains and warps the halls around it. If the engine is not shut down, the thing will either break free or drag the whole floor into a permanent death-haunted rift.
History
This level began as a royal ossuary built to honor a line of plague dead and seal their remains beneath blessed stone. Generations later, a corpse-cult opened tomb walls into ritual alcoves, flooded old drainage tunnels, and installed a summoning engine in the heart chamber, turning ancestral burial spaces into a factory for undeath.
Encounter Table
CRLoose corpses animated by scraps of residual ritual force, often carrying broken tools or candle stubs.
A masked cult guard tasked with patrolling between the gallery and the engine room, still chanting under its breath.
A spirit swollen with stolen funerary magic, its body flickering between bones and smoke.
A cluster of small skeletal hands crawling through cracks and drains to tug at exposed gear and ankles.
Rumours & Whispers
The old crypt below the cemetery is said to breathe at night, and the gravediggers refuse to work near the sealed stair.
A merchant swears he saw black water running uphill out of the hill tombs after the last new moon.
People say the cult was trying to command something so ancient that even the dead were afraid of it.
A chapel acolyte vanished after hearing chanting from beneath a grave marker that had not moved in a century.
The cemetery's iron bells ring by themselves whenever lightning strikes the hill.
