The Weeping Cellars
The town drinks the rot that drips from the stone.
A damp and claustrophobic complex of basements and tunnels beneath a quiet countryside town. It features a mix of rotting stonework and slick, hand-dug earthen burrows that lead deep into the putrid earth.
The air is freezing and heavy with the smell of wet earth and ancient fermentation. Rhythmic dripping sounds echo through the corridors, accompanied by a faint, wet squelching from the walls. Visibility is hampered by a thick, low-hanging mist of black mold spores.
☠ Threat
The Rot-Mother is a gargantuan fungal entity that has infested the town's central drainage cistern. It has begun to poison the local water table, spreading black spores that slowly turn living creatures into mindless thralls. The entity seeks to expand its reach until every living soul in the town above is part of its sprawling, interconnected hive mind.
History
Originally built as cold storage foundations for the town's founding families, these cellars were abandoned decades ago after heavy bog runoff contaminated the stone. A sentient fungal blight took root in the damp masonry, slowly dissolving the mortar and digging deeper into the limestone beneath the streets. The town eventually sealed the entrance after several citizens vanished into the dark, whispering of a hunger that lives below.
