Avoid the beam's line of sight, block the eye, or disable it with expert Occultism or dispel magic.

Its story

What it looks like

A wet, lidless eye the size of a wagon wheel, suspended in a cage of black iron hooks.

Why it is here

To torment captives, break their will, and provide grim amusement for the Kythons who oversee the torture.

Who made it

Velstrac torturers of the Shadow Plane, who fashioned it to break prisoners and amuse the Kythons during long stretches of grim routine.

Lore

Velstracs claim the eye was made to reveal the pain hidden in a victim's memories.

Where it is found

The Shadow Plane and other planar sites used by velstracs, especially torture chambers, galleries, and prison corridors.

Variants

A gallery version has several eyes that activate in sequence, each aiming at a different part of the room.
A memory-sifting version deals less damage but grants its creator a fleeting impression of the target's strongest emotional memory.
A Kython's plaything may fire only when a creature speaks, laughs, or attempts to reassure another captive.

Plot hooks

A prisoner who endured the beam now insists that one of the party members betrayed them in a memory that never happened.
A bored Kyton has left the eye active in a corridor leading to the cell of a prisoner the party needs alive.
The eye's visions reveal a real secret from a victim's past, making it unclear whether the device merely distorts memories or can also expose them.
