Mara Vex, Route Reader of the Obsidian Tribunal

This cultist is known among the Obsidian Tribunal as a Route Reader, a functionary who memorizes travel times, road features, and witness counts. The wagon ambush is part of a larger doctrine: terror should arrive before the main force does. Its clipped warnings and rigid corrections reveal that the caravan was selected to be seen, not merely robbed, and that Silverford Crossing is one stop on a deliberate chain of intimidation.

Ditch-Born Shadow. The cultist has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in ditches, behind the wagon, or among broken roadside rocks. While it has half cover or better from a creature, that creature has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to spot it in dim light.
Measured Opening. The cultist adds its Charisma modifier to initiative rolls when the encounter begins from an ambush or while it is actively reading the ritual chant.
Graven Hex. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 9 () necrotic damage, and the target cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn if it fails a Wisdom saving throw.
Dread Catechism. Each creature of the cultist's choice within 15 feet that can hear it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 7 () psychic damage and is frightened of the cultist until the end of its next turn. On a success, the creature takes half damage and is not frightened. This is a fear-linked ritual phrase, not a magical spell.
Duck Into Cover. When a creature the cultist can see targets it with an attack while it is behind the wagon, in a ditch, or behind low rocks, it adds +2 to its AC against that attack if the attacker is more than 5 feet away.
Cantrips
Tribunal Ritual MagicEnchantment and Necromancy The cultist knows the following spells and uses Charisma as its spellcasting ability (spell save DC 13, +5 to hit with spell attacks). It can cast the cantrips at will: thaumaturgy, toll the dead. It can cast each of the following spells once per day: bane, command, cause fear.
