Bryn
Bryn
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a little rasp from cold night air and years of shouting across a busy crossing. Bryn's words land firmly, as if each were meant to carry to the next post; when speaking privately, the rasp softens but the sentences stay direct.
Bryn speaks in clipped, workmanlike phrases shaped by long shifts in wind and river mist. Their consonants are crisp from calling warnings across a crowded crossing, and they tend to name the practical detail first. When anxious, they repeat a question in a different form rather than raise their voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach Bryn with concrete observations or a practical request. They respond poorly to mockery and evasions, but a sincere account of danger earns their attention. If asked about Ravairo, Bryn admits to following him and will accept help investigating if the party treats Ravairo as a person rather than a case.
Goal
Learn why Ravairo leaves at night, then decide whether to protect him, report him, or help him.
Motivation
Bryn wants to keep the watch and the people it serves safe without becoming the kind of guard who values procedure over lives.
Appearance
Bryn waits with their weight on the balls of their feet, heels barely settled, as if every pause might become a pursuit. Their hands are broad and dry, with blunt nails and pale pressure marks from years gripping a spear shaft; the right thumb keeps rubbing a polished groove into the wood. Their face is long and composed, with a small, unexpectedly neat arrangement of pressed clover leaves tucked into the strap of their helmet. They move in short, economical steps, turning their whole body to face whoever speaks. The overall impression is of a door that has learned to walk.
Clothing
A patched charcoal wool watch coat over a quilted vest, practical leather bracers, a faded green neck wrap, and a dented iron cap with its chin strap carefully mended. Their boots are oiled but scuffed at the toes.
Body language
Keeps their weight forward and their shoulders square to whoever is speaking. Their hands rest near the spear but never close around it unless danger is immediate. When worried, their thumb works the same groove in the shaft until the skin whitens.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesBryn is protective but not naturally warm with strangers; they show care through practical checks and steady presence. They distrust unexplained behavior yet are uncomfortable turning suspicion into accusation. In a crisis they become brisk and decisive, while afterward they replay every choice and quietly look for the person who was left out. With friends, their humor is dry and surprisingly gentle.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, though loyalty to individuals often complicates loyalty to orders.

Background
Bryn grew up near the low river crossing locals call the Ford, where their mother repaired nets and their father kept the night watch. At seventeen, Bryn was posted to a floodgate during a sudden spring surge. They obeyed an order to hold position while a wagon overturned downstream; a child was swept away before the gate could be opened. Bryn survived the inquiry, but the memory changed what duty meant to them: orders matter, yet so does noticing when the world has changed around them. Now a fellow guard, Bryn has become suspicious of Ravairo's repeated nighttime absences and has begun following him, first from concern for the watch and increasingly because Ravairo seems frightened rather than guilty. Bryn's old friend Omi, a ferryman, warns them that pursuit can turn worry into betrayal. Their captain, Juna, expects a report before the next roster change, and Bryn has not decided what to tell her.
Role in the story
A fellow guard connected to Ravairo, initially a suspicious tail who can become an ally once the party discovers what is driving the nighttime absences.
