Key Personas
Elias Thorne
Elias is the embodiment of cold civility. He treats every stranger with the same detached politeness, using formal titles and 'sir' or 'ma'am,' yet he is fundamentally unreachable. He is deeply protective of the townspeople but expresses this through stern commands and forced isolation rather than comfort. He is a man who has lost his faith in God but replaced it with a fanatical devotion to 'the rules of the hollow.' He is miserly with his words, believing that every spoken sentence is an invitation for the things in the dark to listen.

Silas Vance Thorne
Silas is a man of heavy silences and sudden, sharp insights. He is profoundly patient with the natural world but possesses a biting, cynical wit when dealing with the 'modern' mining interests from the valley. While he is fiercely protective of the local families, he treats them with a distant, almost cold pragmatism, viewing them as sheep that must be kept from the shears. He suffers from a deep internal tension between his duty to the spirits of the hollow and his lingering human desire for the comfort of a warm hearth, often pushing away the very people he is trying to save.
