Recipe: Town Block
The air in this corner of Crossways Hold is so thick with the scent of roasted malt and sharp rind that you could almost spread it on toast. Cobblestone streets, polished to a dull shine by the boots of Tilas merchants and Honeydew halflings, curve in a tight crescent around a bustling plaza. Here, the architecture is a whimsical blend of sturdy human timber-framing and low-slung, circular halfling doorways, all punctuated by the occasional brass pipe or venting steam-whistle from a gnome-built kitchen. Laughter spills out from three distinct taverns, each vying for the attention of the evening crowd with colorful signage and competing bards. At the center of it all stands the monolith of gastronomy: Gallentine’s, its windows displaying cheese wheels the size of wagon wheels. This isn't just a marketplace; it is the beating heart of the kingdom’s hospitality, where a missed fermentation or a sour batch of ale is treated with the same gravity as a declaration of war.
Orla High-Hill, Matriarch of the Thrice-Tapped Tun
“In Tilas they drink to forget. In Blummidlop they drink to invent. But in Crossways? We drink because it would be a sin to let a vintage this good stay in the barrel.”
The waitstaff are trained to maintain absolute silence unless spoken to, and they communicate via a complex system of subtle eyebrow raises and hand gestures to rank the wealth of incoming patrons. Any customer with mud on their boots is sat in the draftiest corner near the kitchen door.
The ceiling is only five and a half feet high, making it extremely cozy for halflings and gnomes but forcing human tourists and guards to duck as they move between tables.
The mechanical arms have a 5 percent chance of attempting to pat a patron on the head instead of delivering their drink. The entire building hums with a low, rhythmic thumping of steam pistons.
Master Gallentine constantly twitches his nose and can identify a customer's last meal from ten feet away. He often speaks to his cheese wheels as if they were his children, whispering encouragement to the molds in the aging racks.
A sprawling subterranean labyrinth of stone corridors and wooden racks used to age the famous cheeses and spirits of Crossways Hold. The air is heavy with the sharp scent of fermenting dairy and the constant, mechanical ticking of gnome security devices.
