Contextual Narrative

The Golden Rind Quarter

The air in the Golden Rind Quarter is a thick, intoxicating perfume of woodsmoke, fermented hops, and the sharp, earthy tang of aged goat cheese. Cobblestone streets, paved with sturdy gnomish granite, hum with the chatter of Tilas nobility seeking the finest linens and the heavy footfalls of caravan guards eager to spend their silver on the Hold's legendary spirits. This is the jewel of Crossways Hold, where every doorway offers a different flavor and every window displays a gnomish marvel. Halfling-sized cottages with circular oak doors stand shoulder-to-shoulder with human-scale timber inns, while gnomish 'glow-lanterns' cast a warm, perpetual sunset over the busy streets. The architecture is a collaborative masterpiece: human-built stone foundations for stability, halfling-styled flower boxes for beauty, and gnomish mechanical awnings that deploy automatically when the mountain mist rolls in. It is a place of high commerce, culinary obsession, and the constant, rhythmic clinking of toasting glasses.

High Steward Pennegan, Halfling Constable

In other towns, people fight over politics or gods. In Crossways Hold, we've had three riots this century over the salt content of a cheddar rind.

Tavern

The Gilded Rind

The tavern staff conducts a ritualistic polishing of the gold leaf cheese motifs every sunset. Patrons are required to wear a provided gold leaf lapel pin to access the VIP lounge.

The Gears & Grinds

The entire tavern has a rhythmic, low-frequency hum like a heartbeat, and the brass floorboards are perpetually warm to the touch. Occasionally, a clockwork waiter will burst into a short, jaunty steam-whistle solo if it receives a generous tip in the coin slot.

The Hearth and Harvest

The tavern enforces a strict no-magic-at-the-table policy, requiring all gnomish curiosities to be deactivated and spellcasting to be taken outside to maintain the natural, cozy atmosphere. The doorframes are intentionally low, requiring human tourists to duck, while halflings and gnomes move freely.

Shop

Gallentine's World of Cheese

The shop is kept at a constant biting chill by a network of blue-tinted gnomish frost-pipes. Customers are expected to speak in hushed tones, as Orlow believes loud noises can cause the delicate rinds of his aging wheels to crack prematurely.

The Tinkers' Gallery

The shop is a vertical cylinder. Fiznik moves through it by jumping between complex mechanical ladders that shift and rotate based on which ropes are pulled. Customers are often expected to wait at the bottom while he brings items down using a small basket elevator.

Quest Objectives

The Great Cheese Heist: A rare wheel of 'Blue Moon Gouda' has been stolen from Gallentine’s personal aging rack.

Retrieving the cheese earns the party a 'Permanent Taster' pass and free lodging in the district.
The thief sells the cheese to a rival town, causing a local economic scandal and banning the party from Gallentine's.

Gnome-Tech Sabotage: The illusionary 'dancing cheese' signs in the district have been hacked to show insulting caricatures of the human Mayor.

The party tracks the saboteur to the Tinker’s Gallery, earning a reward from the local defense militia.
Diplomatic tensions rise between Tilas and Crossways Hold as the Mayor blames 'human-hating radicals.'
