About

Dessa Flint is a broad-shouldered tiefling with soot-streaked red-brown skin, blunt filed horns, and one cloudy eye damaged by an old forge accident. She speaks in short, practical sentences and judges customers by whether they maintain their equipment. Refugees receive repairs on credit, while wealthy outsiders are charged full price and questioned about their intentions. Her forge bellows are patched with tavern canvas, creating a standing supply debt to the local inn. She trades salvage findings with the settlement's alchemist and provisions keeper, and she has personally repaired the fort gate, watchtower ladders, and several cracked spear racks. Dessa supports the former mercenary captain's plan to hold the fort rather than abandon it. Secretly, she discovered fresh claw-like scoring inside a sealed weapons chest and hid the evidence from the council because she fears panic, political blame, and the possibility that the creature came from beneath the eastern bastion.

Stash

The stash · GM only

The shop occupies the fort's former armory, with the public sales counter near the gate-facing entrance and the working forge in the center. Dessa keeps coin and records close to the counter, while salvage, old insignia, and the sealed weapons chest remain in a rear alcove partly screened by hanging chains and scrap shields. A narrow service passage connects the rear storage area to the tavern's supply room, though the passage is usually blocked by barrels.

Security check: DC 12Dexterity (Stealth) with thieves' tools, or an equivalent tool or skulduggery check for the game system
If they fail: A failed theft attempt may trigger a hanging bell connected to the forge door, alerting Dessa and the nearby watch. If the party continues after being noticed, she bars the entrance, calls for the gate guards, and publicly names the thieves during the next settlement council meeting. If the Bastion-Warm Blade is disturbed, its sudden heat gives Dessa an additional warning even if the party avoids the bell.
The whole haul: About 79 gp

Dessa's Cash Box18 gp
Kept: Locked iron box beneath the counter, concealed behind a hanging strip of leather and ashwood tools.
The day's mixed payments from refugees, guards, and passing adventurers, including copper and silver coins with a few gold pieces tucked beneath the ledger.
Value: 18 gp, 7 sp, and 34 cp
Mentor's Iron Signet5 gp
Kept: Inside a cloth pouch in the bottom drawer of Dessa's workbench.
A worn blacksmith's signet ring engraved with a stylized anvil and a small tiefling horn motif. It belonged to Dessa's former mentor and has strong sentimental value.
Value: 5 gp as jewelry, considerably more to Dessa
Salvage and Supply Ledger25 gp
Kept: Under a loose forge brick beside the wall shared with the tavern's storage passage.
A bundle of signed debt slips documenting supplies owed to the tavern, the alchemist, and several refugee families. The records could be used to bargain with merchants or expose how much the settlement depends on salvage.
Value: 25 gp in leverage or forgiven debts
Cinderwatch Insignia Plates30 gp
Kept: Wrapped in oiled cloth inside a shallow crate of scrap metal near the rear quench trough.
Six undamaged Cinderwatch insignia plates, removed from old weapons and shields. Collectors, historians, and agents of the former fort command may pay well for them.
Value: 30 gp total, or more to a faction seeking proof of Cinderwatch lineage
Claw-Scored Chest FragmentPriceless as evidence, though worth little as scrap
Kept: Hidden beneath a canvas cover behind stacked bucklers in the restricted rear alcove.
A fragment of a sealed weapons-chest lid bearing three fresh claw-like scores. The marks are too deep and clean to have been made by ordinary vermin. Taking it could conceal the evidence or provide proof that something entered the sealed armory.
