A Varn possesses skin resembling polished obsidian glass, which is faintly translucent in certain lights and fractured by luminous golden veins. These cracks, known as aurum vitae, pulse with a soft glow and follow patterns reminiscent of root systems or celestial maps. Their eyes are solid, unblinking orbs of metallic gold or silver, devoid of pupils or whites. Most Varn lack traditional hair, possessing instead crown-like ridges of dark crystal or fine, hair-like filaments of bronze and black metal. Many Varn adorn themselves with ritual scars that follow their natural glow fissures, and they tend to wear minimalist, geometric garments in deep violets and bronzes that do not obscure their radiant markings.

Varn society is defined by the balance between their immense potential and their inherent instability. They are often sequestered into roles of high importance such as seers, master archivists within the Grimoire, or arcane conduits for the state. Despite their status, they are viewed with a mixture of reverence and dread. Many Varn choose to live in meditative silence, as their sensitivity to magical resonance makes crowded or magically noisy environments physically painful. They value clarity of thought and the preservation of ancient or future knowledge above all else.

Most Varn lean toward Neutrality, acting as observers of the grander cycles of time. Those who embrace their chaotic magical nature may become unpredictable wanderers, while those who seek to control the visions become pillars of Law. They rarely worship traditional deities, instead paying homage to the abstract concept of the Great Echo, the source of their resonant power.

They do not have a nation of their own but gravitate toward places of extreme magical or historical significance. Varn architecture, where it exists in small enclaves, is characterized by floating geometric structures and the use of resonance-dampening materials like lead and cold iron to provide mental peace.

Other peoples of the Veil often treat Varn as omens. The Sunmarked Folk find their presence unsettlingly alien, while more grounded species like the Stoneveil kin view them as beautiful but fragile weapons. Varn tend to be distant but polite, finding it difficult to bond with those whose lives are not plagued by the same temporal echoes they experience.
