Atmosphere
The air is thick with the scent of wet parchment, ozone, and ancient dust. A heavy, magical silence hangs over the halls, broken only by the rhythmic drip of water and the occasional shuffling of unseen things between the stacks. Magical lanterns flicker with a dying, violet light.
Style
High Imperial Gothic with necromantic motifs. Columns are carved to resemble stacked vertebrae, and the archways are shaped like yawning maws.

Built six centuries ago by the Archmage Zax to house his collection of forbidden chronomancy and soul-binding research. It served as a beacon of dark knowledge until a magical explosion during the 'Thaw of Spirits' killed the faculty and warped the local geography. It has been officially abandoned for two hundred years, though scavengers and dark mages often try to brave its decaying interior.

Located in the sub-basement, these books are chained to their shelves with silver links. Each volume contains the trapped consciousness of a lesser mage. To read a book, a visitor must succeed on a DC 18 Charisma saving throw or have their own consciousness swapped with the book's inhabitant for 1d4 hours.

However, in its current state, the index is senile and often leads parties into hazardous areas, such as the flooded 'Section of Infinite Corridors' or straight into the lair of the Marrow-Eater.

Furthermore, residual 'Silence' spells have become permanent and mobile, drifting through the halls like invisible clouds that prevent spellcasting with verbal components.
