The Orebender Approach
The old road descends beneath the mountain, and something has begun marching back up it.
The Orebender Caverns begin as a broad dwarven road descending from a windswept surface cut into the mountain. This upper transit level once carried miners, ore carts, and military patrols between the outer mines and a deeper fortified section, but recent tremors and failing defenses have driven hungry wildlife into the passage.
Cold mineral air flows down from the surface, carrying the smells of wet stone, old iron, bat musk, and disturbed earth. Pale veins of blue and green ore glimmer in the walls, while distant clicks, scraping claws, and the occasional boom of shifting stone echo through the passage. Most light comes from guttering blue fungus and ancient dwarven lamps that flare briefly when approached.
☠ Threat
The deeper defense complex has partially awakened. Its damaged command network now identifies movement, animal scent, and loud mining sounds as signs of invasion, causing old guardians to patrol the corridors and drive cave predators toward the surface. At the heart of the floor, a cracked dwarven sentinel directs the defenses from behind sealed doors, growing more aggressive whenever its warning bells are disturbed.
History
The Orebender clan carved this transit level through a rich black-vein cavern nearly four hundred years ago. It served as a guarded road between the upper mines and a fortified subterranean crossing, with drainage channels, supply alcoves, watch posts, and kill corridors built into the stone. When tremors cracked the deeper gates, the dwarves raised barricades and evacuated, leaving their defenses dormant but never fully deactivated.
Encounter Table
CRA pack of pale cave hounds driven from the deeper defenses, their paws leaving damp prints on the stone.
A skittering swarm of mineral-backed insects that feeds on fungus, leather, and exposed metal.
A damaged dwarven patrol automaton with one glowing eye and a rusted spear arm.
Rumours & Whispers
The old dwarves carved a road straight through the mountain, but something now walks it wearing a miner's helmet.
Blue fungus marks safe ground, while red fungus grows where the stone remembers blood.
A whole patrol vanished behind the black-vein gate, and their shields can still be heard knocking from the other side.
The animals near the mine have become fearless because a deeper predator is driving them toward the surface.
The Orebender clan left a treasure room somewhere above the sealed defenses, protected by a door that opens only for a worker's badge.

Quest giver: Bramm Vell, a caravan master
A merchant caravan needs the old passage reopened to reach a lower mine before winter, but every scouting party has returned wounded by creatures wearing scraps of dwarven armor.
150 gp, trade favors, and a permanent discount on mineral goods

Corridor Notes
Faded worker tallies cover the lower stones, recording ore carts, missing miners, and emergency shifts from centuries ago.
Shallow drainage channels cut through the floor, carrying cold water toward lower cisterns. Several are clogged with feathers, bones, and black cave slime.
Rusting brackets hold fragments of red-painted warning boards. Most bear only the dwarven words for halt, seal, and beast below.
Fresh claw marks overlap old chisel scars on the walls, showing that predators have been driven from deeper caverns into the upper level.
