The Deep Ward
The old defenses still stand, but they no longer know whom they are protecting.
Beyond the wildlife-haunted upper passage lies a sealed dwarven defense complex built to stop anything escaping from the mines below. Its gates, traps, and ward engines still function, but corrupted instructions make them as dangerous to explorers as to the cavern predators they were designed to contain.
Cold mineral air rolls through the complex, carrying wet stone, old ash, and the musky scent of cavern beasts. Blue-white ward runes flicker along the walls, sometimes plunging corridors into darkness before reigniting with a harsh metallic chime. Water drips into the fissure below, while distant grinding sounds suggest that the ancient defenses never truly stopped working.
☠ Threat
The deepest chamber houses the Last Anvil, an ancient defensive engine built around a living core of rune-bound metal. Its instructions have been corrupted by the mining disaster, causing it to treat beasts, dwarves, and adventurers as shifting categories of ally and enemy. The engine is also holding back a greater danger in the fissure, and damaging it without understanding its purpose may open the way below.
History
The Orebender clan carved this fortified passage beneath their mine to guard a vital route between the mountain hold and the lower workings. After a mining blast shattered the cavern floor, strange beasts flooded into the tunnels and the ward network began issuing contradictory commands. The dwarves evacuated the upper galleries, sealed the Gateworks, and left behind weapons, repair tools, and a final defense engine.
