The Lantern Gate Household
After the founding decade, the house secured its place by becoming indispensable rather than beloved. During the Grain Road Winter, they rerouted caravans when the mills failed and earned the gratitude of Old Harwick's merchants. Later, they angered powerful landowners by refusing to reveal which clients had used their safe rooms, establishing their signature promise of 'safe passage, sealed speech.' Their growth was not smooth. A generation ago, the Ember Audit exposed that a senior Sealwright had sold travel schedules to bandits in exchange for protection of his own son. The resulting purge split the house into reformers and pragmatists, and the Reform of Three Lamps followed, creating stricter ledger control, rotating escort assignments, and a formal ban on any single branch family controlling the routes. That reform saved them, but it also made them more political. Today they are respected as careful, efficient, and nearly impossible to outmaneuver, yet everyone with sharp instincts knows they are always one ledger away from scandal.
