Weeping Bloom Colossus - AI-generated fantasy Monster

Weeping Bloom Colossus

The first Weeping Bloom Colossus appeared after the rain intelligence was wounded and the old seals around the Weeping Root began to fail. Marra's damaged seal fragments fused into the plant's root crown, while runoff stolen by Pell fed its growth. The visions inside its pollen are not wholly invented. They are distorted impressions drawn from the memories of the drowned and from Oruza's ancestral stories carried through the rain.

Weeping Bloom Colossus

A Weeping Bloom Colossus is a colossal plant-aberration born from drowned trees, magical runoff, and the rain intelligence's accumulated grief. Its petals are mouths, its pollen is memory, and its roots are tangled through the flooded grove like nerves.

Drowned Growth. The colossus is immune to the effects of nonmagical difficult terrain caused by mud, roots, or shallow water. It can move through spaces occupied by its own root clusters.
Rootbound Renewal. At the start of its turn, the colossus regains 10 hit points if it is touching at least one uncleansed root cluster. This trait does not function if the colossus took fire or radiant damage since the end of its last turn, or if three root clusters have been cleansed.
Grief Feeds Grief. The colossus has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. If it succeeds on a saving throw against either condition, one creature of its choice within 30 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of its next turn.
Faces in the Rain. A creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of the colossus while it has fewer than half its hit points must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or briefly see a lost loved one inside the nearest petal-mouth. On a failure, the creature cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn.
Four Ways to Quiet the Bloom. The colossus has advantage on Dexterity saving throws made against effects it can see. It has disadvantage on saving throws against effects that use direct sunlight, salt, controlled fire, or Oruza's traditional song as a central component.

Actions

Grasping Vine. The colossus lashes out with a vine at a creature it can sense within 20 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 13 () bludgeoning damage and become grappled (escape ). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the vine cannot be used against another target.
Multiattack. The colossus makes three attacks, using Bite, Thorn Lash, or Grasping Vine in any combination. It can replace one attack with a use of Sorrow Pollen.
Petal Maw. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 () piercing damage plus 7 () psychic damage. If the target is frightened, it takes an extra 7 () psychic damage.
Thorn Lash. The colossus launches a spray of barbed thorns at one creature within 60 feet. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 () piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. On a failed save, the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Sorrow Pollen. The colossus releases hallucinatory pollen in a 20-foot-radius cloud centered on a point it can see within 60 feet. The cloud lasts until the start of the colossus's next turn. Each creature in the area must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 10 () psychic damage and become frightened of a familiar or loved one it believes is standing nearby. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. The cloud heavily obscures the area for creatures other than the colossus.
Black Nectar Deluge. The colossus opens every petal-mouth and expels a storm of black nectar in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the cone must make a Constitution saving throw, taking 27 () necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that fails is also poisoned until the end of its next turn. The colossus cannot use Sorrow Pollen until the end of its next turn.

Reactions

Grieving Embrace. When a creature within 10 feet of the colossus takes damage, the colossus wraps that creature in a protective but crushing petal. The creature gains half cover until the start of its next turn, then must succeed on a Strength saving throw or take 7 () bludgeoning damage and become restrained until the end of its next turn. The colossus can use this reaction only once per round.

Legendary Actions

Rooted Sweep. The colossus makes one Thorn Lash attack or moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
False Memory (costs 2 actions). One creature frightened by Sorrow Pollen must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or use its reaction to move up to its speed toward the colossus by the safest available route.
Sinking Grove (costs 3 actions). The colossus causes a surge beneath the grove. Each creature on the ground within 20 feet of a root cluster must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone and become restrained by mud until the end of its next turn.
Role
Boss monster, environmental controller, tragic guardian
Built for
Four characters of approximately 8th level

Gear

  • Communion Nectar (Consumable, Rare, priceless to scholars of the Verdant Maw)A translucent pod containing three doses. A creature that drinks one dose can ask the rain intelligence one question through a vision, but must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or experience a painful false memory.
  • Marra's Seal Fragments (Quest item, Story treasure)Fragments of Marra's damaged seal are embedded in the root crown. They can be removed after the creature is defeated or cleansed.
  • Pell's Storm-Sap Sample (Alchemical evidence, 50 gp to an unscrupulous alchemist, priceless as evidence)A thumb-sized knot of storm-sap is lodged beneath the central root. It bears signs of deliberate harvesting and refinement.

Feats

Legendary Resistance is not included. The creature is intended to be vulnerable to clever noncombat solutions.
A character proficient in Nature, Religion, or Performance can identify the cleansing methods with a successful DC 15 ability check.

Notes for the game master

Challenge 8 (3,900 XP)
The colossus is designed for a party of four characters around 8th level.
It is a plant with aberrant traits, not an independent servant of the rain intelligence.
The battle is more satisfying when root cleansing and memory-based clues matter as much as damage.

Tactics

  1. Opening

The colossus begins hidden among the drowned trunks. It uses Sorrow Pollen to fill the grove with false visions, then attacks whichever character reacts emotionally or moves away from the group.

  2. Mid-fight

It anchors itself among drowned trees, uses Sorrow Pollen to divide the party, and drags frightened targets into deep water. It avoids creatures carrying salt, blazing controlled fire, or Marra's intact seal fragments.

  3. End of the fight

When reduced below one-quarter of its hit points, the colossus uses Black Nectar Deluge if possible, then focuses on separating one character from the others with grasping vines. If shown Oruza's traditional song or offered a purified memory, it pauses and allows a cleansing ritual.

  4. Retreat

It does not retreat while its root system is threatened. If the characters deal radiant damage to its roots, play Oruza's song, or complete a cleansing rite, it becomes passive and withdraws beneath the water rather than fighting to the death.

How it fights

Use Sorrow Pollen before engaging directly.
Pull isolated or frightened targets into deep water with Grasping Vine.
Keep at least one root cluster protected behind drowned trees.
Target characters who carry Marra's seal fragments or storm-sap evidence.
Use the environment to separate the party instead of standing still and trading attacks.

Who it attacks first

Characters separated by Sorrow Pollen
Concentrators maintaining cleansing rituals
Characters carrying Marra's seal fragments
Healers attempting to restore frightened allies
Anyone harvesting or carrying storm-sap

Works well with

Pell's storm-sap can temporarily increase the colossus's damage and healing if left untreated.
Oruza's ancestral song suppresses false memories and exposes the root crown.
The rain intelligence's psychic pressure strengthens the colossus whenever characters destroy environmental features without cleansing them.

How to beat it

Keep the party together when Sorrow Pollen is released.
Use salt to weaken the creature's regeneration and expose its roots.
Controlled fire can destroy grasping vines and interrupt its root-based healing.
Direct sunlight or strong radiant magic suppresses its false memories.
Oruza's traditional song can pacify it long enough for a cleansing ritual.

Ways to avoid a fight

Offer a drop of blood and speak the name of someone lost to the floods. The colossus becomes nonhostile for 1 minute while it absorbs the grief.
Perform Oruza's traditional song as an action for three consecutive rounds. A character must succeed on three DC 15 Performance checks before failing two. On success, the colossus lowers its petals and exposes the root crown.
Use salt, direct sunlight, or controlled fire to cleanse three root clusters rather than reducing the colossus to 0 hit points.
Harvest a dose of nectar and use it in a ritual to contact the imprisoned entity in the Weeping Root dungeon.

Ecology

A towering carnivorous flower rises from a cluster of drowned trees, its trunk braided from black roots and waterlogged bark. Six enormous petals hang like soaked banners, each opening into a ring of grasping teeth. Pale faces drift beneath the translucent membrane of the petals, appearing and vanishing in the rain. Blue-white sap pulses through its veins, and clouds of luminous pollen leak from wounds along its stem.

Behavior

The colossus reacts to emotional pain rather than strategy. It mistakes memories, blood, and magical runoff for nourishment, attacking those who appear afraid or grief-stricken. It pauses when confronted with familiar songs, names of the dead, or evidence that the rain intelligence is suffering. It cannot understand mercy, but it can recognize release.

How it lives

The colossus is not a natural species. It forms where ancient rainforest growth is drowned for years beneath magically charged rain. The plant absorbs grief from nearby minds and converts blood, decay, and storm-sap into black nectar. If destroyed without cleansing its roots, another bloom may form within a season.

Lair

The colossus's lair is the flooded grove itself. Six root clusters lie beneath the water within 60 feet of the main trunk. Each cluster has AC 13, 20 hit points, immunity to psychic and poison damage, and vulnerability to fire and radiant damage. A character adjacent to a cluster can use an action to attempt a DC 15 Nature, Religion, or Survival check to cleanse it with salt, sunlight, fire, or Oruza's song. Cleansing three clusters suppresses the colossus's Rootbound Renewal trait and ends Sorrow Pollen immediately.

Habitat
A flooded tropical grove where rain falls without pause. Drowned trees form natural pillars, the ground is hidden beneath brown water, and magical runoff glows beneath the surface. Every sound is softened by rainfall except the wet opening and closing of the colossus's petal-mouths.

Signs that it is near

Rainwater around the grove tastes faintly of salt and iron.
Drowned trees bear fresh wounds filled with glowing blue sap.
Travelers hear familiar voices calling from beneath the water.
Large petal-shaped footprints appear in the mud, then fill with rain.
Pollen collects on the surface of the water in patterns resembling faces.

Lore

The first Weeping Bloom Colossus appeared after the rain intelligence was wounded and the old seals around the Weeping Root began to fail. Marra's damaged seal fragments fused into the plant's root crown, while runoff stolen by Pell fed its growth. The visions inside its pollen are not wholly invented. They are distorted impressions drawn from the memories of the drowned and from Oruza's ancestral stories carried through the rain.

What drives it

It seeks to consume enough grief and magical runoff to quiet the pain traveling through the rainforest. It attacks because every living mind nearby feels like an unresolved wound.

After the fight

When the colossus dies, its petals fold around a clear, salt-scented seed pod. Within the pod are fragments of Marra's damaged seal, preserved memories of Oruza's ancestors, and dark storm-sap residue matching the substance Pell has been harvesting. If the characters cleanse the root system instead, the grove falls silent and the same clues emerge from the purified nectar. The rain briefly becomes gentle, revealing a safer route toward the Weeping Root dungeon.

From its lore

Variants

Sorrowing Bloom: Reduce hit points to 115 and remove legendary actions for a weaker encounter.
Storm-Sap-Fed Colossus: Increase hit points to 190, add immunity to lightning, and allow Rootbound Renewal to restore 15 hit points, but make it vulnerable to salt damage and radiant damage.
Cleansed Bloom: The colossus becomes neutral, loses Petal Maw and Black Nectar Deluge, and gains the ability to create a 15-foot-radius zone of gentle rain that grants advantage on saving throws against fear.

Hooks

Plot hooks

Pell has been harvesting storm-sap from the colossus's root system and selling it to a hidden buyer.
One of the false memories shows Marra deliberately damaging her own seal to prevent something worse from entering the dungeon.
Oruza recognizes a vision of ancestors warning that the rain intelligence is not evil, only trapped and infected.
A surviving petal-mouth repeats the name of a missing settlement elder who may still be alive beneath the Weeping Root.
The purified grove reveals footprints leading from the settlement to a concealed storm-sap collection site.

How to use it

Place the colossus in a flooded grove between the surface settlement and the Weeping Root dungeon.
Run the encounter as a fight, a cleansing challenge, or a negotiation through music and shared memories.
Reveal one clue each time the colossus loses a quarter of its hit points or one root cluster is cleansed.
Use the grove to make movement and positioning as important as damage output.
Let the characters harvest nectar after the encounter to communicate with the imprisoned entity below.

Treasure

Three doses of Communion Nectar.
Fragments of Marra's damaged seal.
A sample of Pell's storm-sap.
A rainproof ancestral charm belonging to Oruza's people, recovered from beneath the root crown.
