At the table

Voice

Bright and forward, with a slight rasp from salt air and long nights projecting over crowds. Her laugh breaks into quick, percussive bursts; when she recites details, each name and number lands cleanly, as if she were setting a beat.

Her voice has a clear, bright edge shaped by years of carrying words over tavern noise and surf. She lands punchlines crisply, clips her consonants when counting facts, and lets a phrase bounce into a refrain when she wants a room to follow her lead.

Speech patterns

Opens with playful compliments, then asks practical questions disguised as friendly curiosity.
Uses rhythm, repeated phrases, and a punchline to steer heated conversations away from violence.
When discussing the navy or the rumored cult, asks who benefits rather than announcing what she suspects.

How to play them

Meet her where music or conversation is welcome. She responds to humor, practical favors, and specific information about ships or local politics. Do not corner her with a drawn knife or try to bully someone in front of her. Treat Veska as a person in her own right, not as leverage.

Goal

Find credible evidence of the rumored underwater cult and determine whether it has compromised Imperial Navy personnel, without exposing Veska to retaliation.

Motivation

Protect Veska, serve the interests of her allies, and prevent a hidden sea power from gaining a foothold in the Imperial Navy.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Napuli Raska is a svelte, ebony-skinned orc whose silver hair is cropped close at the sides and gathered into a bright, braided crest. Tiny tusks peek from her smile, and brilliant blue eyes track a room with the alertness of someone counting exits and opportunities at once. She moves with a dancer’s precise, rolling balance, but her shoulders stay squared toward the nearest threat. Her fingertips are permanently stained with indigo stage pigment, and she rubs the pads together when judging a stranger. People often remember how she can turn a crowded, smoky tavern into an audience without raising her voice.

Clothing

Onstage she favors pale, lightly colored silk wraps and fitted trousers, cut to move easily and suggestively without impeding a dance. Offstage, she layers a weatherproof shawl over the same bright fabrics and keeps a small blade secured where it cannot be mistaken for an invitation to draw it.

Body language

She keeps time with her ankles when music plays and pivots smoothly to face anyone who approaches. In a tense exchange, the playfulness leaves her mouth before it leaves her posture; she squares her shoulders and puts herself between the disputants.

Distinguishing features

Tiny tusks show when she smiles, making her warmth seem more mischievous than harmless.
Brilliant blue eyes keep measuring doors, hands, and shifts in a crowd.
Indigo pigment stains the pads of her fingertips from repairing stage makeup and costume details.
Her dancing gait has a subtle sideward roll, as though she is always making room for someone to pass.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Warm and playfully flirtatious when music is up, Napuli enjoys making a room feel like a celebration. She is also watchful and transactional, quietly sorting useful details from idle talk. Her patience vanishes around drawn knives or aggressive arguments. In private, especially when Veska is at risk, her humor gives way to fierce, sometimes reckless protectiveness.

Quirks

Taps a syncopated rhythm against her thumb whenever someone gives a suspiciously polished answer.
Turns cups by their handles until every handle points toward an exit.
Names a tune after the first lie she catches in a conversation, then hums it later as a private reminder.
Refuses to let anyone pass her a knife handle-first; she asks them to set it down instead.
When worried about Veska, checks the fastening on her own costume as though it were a message she had forgotten to deliver.

Habits

When music is playing, she welcomes strangers into the rhythm and makes each feel briefly chosen.
When voices turn hostile, she breaks the conversational rhythm with a joke, a toast, or an abrupt change of subject.
She listens closely to sailors and merchants who have had too much to drink, then remembers exact names, routes, and dates.
She positions herself between Veska and any obvious danger, even while pretending to be focused on the performance.

Traits · 4

She makes strangers feel welcome while privately assessing what they know.
She enjoys attention onstage but dislikes being treated as a possession or prize.
She is loyal to the empire, yet resents officers who mistake loyalty for obedience.
She offers comfort readily and trust slowly.

Flaws · 3

Her imperial loyalties make her too ready to excuse exploitation when it benefits her allies.
She can mistake a useful rumor for a reliable fact.
Her intolerance of knives and aggressive arguments can make her abrupt, even when calm discussion would serve her better.

Fears · 3

That the Cult of the Kraken has infiltrated the Imperial Navy.
That her information-gathering will place Veska in the cult’s sights.
Another crowded-room panic in which someone she cares about is trampled or cut.

Wants and needs · 3

Reliable confirmation of whether the rumored cult has reached the Imperial Navy.
Veska’s safety and freedom to make her own choices.
A trustworthy local contact who can distinguish dockside gossip from planted stories.

Combat

AC 30 · HP 150 · 25 feet

Napuli would rather prevent a fight than win one. If combat becomes unavoidable, she supports allies with compositions and control magic, stays mobile, and uses her rapier only to make room for an escape. She will take a dangerous position to protect Veska, but will not pursue a fleeing enemy into an obvious trap.

Background

Born in the Empire of Thyatis, Napuli learned early that a good chorus could loosen a merchant’s tongue faster than a bad interrogation. She made her living performing in dockside rooms, then began quietly turning overheard boasts and shipping gossip into useful leads for imperial contacts and trusted allies. A formative night came when a knife fight broke out during her set: she kept the crowd moving toward the doors with a jaunty refrain while a friend was badly hurt in the crush. Since then, she has treated knives and aggressive arguments as sparks near spilled lamp oil. Now, in the South Seas near the Isle of Dread, she watches for chances to divert useful information and supplies toward her allies. She is devoted to Veska, whose safety has become more important to her than any tidy imperial plan. Rumors of an underwater power’s followers have made her wonder whether the Cult of the Kraken has reached into the Imperial Navy.

Role in the story

A charming performer and imperial-minded information broker whose suspicions may help expose the Cult of the Kraken, while her fierce attachment to Veska creates a pressure point the cult could exploit.
