Kesh Tegba
Kesh Tegba
At the table
“the tall cooper”
Voice
A low, salt-rough murmur that rises at the end of practical statements, as if every fact is also a question.
Kesh speaks in a low, hurried murmur with clipped consonants and a faint sing-song rise at the end of practical statements. Their voice is distinctive because every sentence sounds half whispered and half negotiated. They swallow hard before saying names, especially the names of the dead.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Kesh first tests whether the party knows harbor slang, asks indirect questions about their employer, and watches who looks toward the watchtowers. They reveal the safest rumor for free, then offer the incomplete cargo clue only if protected, paid, or convinced the party is not working for the harbor watch. They are most cooperative in motion, especially while walking through alleys, because sitting still makes them feel trapped.
Goal
Discover what sent the lantern signal through the fog and learn whether the missing cargo is connected to the returned sailor.
Motivation
Kesh wants enough money and protection to leave the port, but a stubborn need to correct one past betrayal keeps pulling them back toward the fog.
Appearance
Kesh is a narrow-shouldered human with a weather-browned face, a long nose bent slightly to one side, and hands permanently roughened by rope, salt, and cheap lamp oil. They move with a crablike economy, never crossing an open patch of dock without first checking three exits. Their smile arrives a heartbeat late, as though selected from a shelf of borrowed expressions. A pale scar runs from the left ear to the collarbone, but the unexpected feature is their immaculate fingernails, each one polished with clear salvage varnish despite the grime covering the rest of them. People remember the soft tap of Kesh's thumb against their front teeth more than their face.
Clothing
A patched oilskin coat over a faded red fisher's shirt, cropped trousers, rope-soled shoes, fingerless gloves, and a belt crowded with hooks, chalk, twine, and tiny brass tokens. Their coat smells of brine, mildew, and clove smoke.
Body language
Kesh keeps their back near walls, angles their body toward exits, and taps one front tooth with a thumbnail whenever they are lying. They lean close when sharing important information, then recoil as though the words have burned them.

Distinguishing features
Personality
17 traits and drivesKesh is observant, suspicious, and startlingly compassionate toward people who work with their hands. They are generous with directions to strangers but stingy with personal truth, especially around anyone who reminds them of the Sable Keel. In a calm mood, they are dryly funny and almost charming. When cornered, they become evasive, petty, and cruelly precise about other people's mistakes. They want to be brave, but mistake preparation for courage and often delay action until the danger has passed.
- Alignment
- Neutral, self-preserving but not cruel

Combat
AC 12 · HP 5 · 30 feetKesh avoids fair fights. They throw the weighted hook to disrupt movement, use crates and mooring posts for cover, shout false warnings, and flee toward tide stairs or crowded alleys. If cornered, they target knees, hands, and lanterns rather than trying to kill. Kesh only fights to escape or protect someone who has earned their trust.

Background
Kesh grew up hauling nets and sorting refuse along the lower piers, where every child learned the language of bells, gulls, and shouted lies. In their twenties, they joined the Sable Keel, a smuggling crew that moved medicine, contraband relics, and sometimes people through the fog banks beyond the breakwater. Kesh became their route-reader and signal watcher. During a winter crossing, the crew's captain ordered Kesh to light a false lantern signal that drew a harbor patrol toward a rival vessel. Kesh changed the signal at the last moment, trying to save a young deckhand named Toma, but the patrol still found the Sable Keel. Toma drowned, two smugglers were arrested, and Kesh vanished with the crew's coded ledger. That betrayal left Kesh alive, employed, and hated by everyone who knew the truth. The formative experience came three years later, when Kesh saw Toma standing barefoot on the mudflats at low tide, bloated and dripping seawater, before the figure disappeared into the fog. Since then, Kesh has treated every unexplained lantern as a warning rather than an opportunity. They rent a cramped room above Saltglass Salvage and spend most nights in the Lantern Below, where they owe the keeper money and trade scraps of information to the shopkeeper. Recently, Kesh witnessed a lantern signal pulsing from inside the fog and saw a sailor believed drowned return to the harbor block. They possess one incomplete clue about missing cargo, but fear that the clue points toward the old Sable Keel ledger.
