Tavi
Tavi
At the table
Voice
A light, slightly rough voice that seems to begin with a breath caught behind the teeth. It carries the dry rasp of sorting leaves and the careful timing of someone accustomed to hearing adults nearby before deciding whether to speak.
Their voice has a dry, breathy catch at the start of a sentence, shaped by cold mornings, dusty storage rooms, and the habit of listening before answering. They speak in practical phrases learned from work, with a quick, bright rush when explaining a plant they know well. Tavi's chosen name has a crisp first sound and a soft ending.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer Tavi a small, concrete task or ask about a plant rather than pressing for their history. Earn trust through consistency. If the characters discover the loft arrangement, Tavi initially denies it, then watches closely to see whether they respond with help or judgment.
Goal
Become skilled enough at herbal work to earn a permanent place at Nera's shop and make sure no child nearby has to sleep outside in winter.
Motivation
Tavi wants to be useful enough that nobody can decide they are disposable, while privately longing for someone to tell them they can stay even when they have nothing to offer.
Appearance
Tavi takes up less room than most people expect, folding close to walls and table legs as if trying not to interrupt the air. They have a narrow, quick-moving face, a faint dusting of freckles, and a smudge of green stain that seems to migrate from one cheek to the other. Their hair sticks out in dry, uneven tufts, with tansy seeds often caught near the crown. They move with a careful, listening tread, then dart suddenly when they think nobody is watching. Before speaking, they take a small, audible breath through their nose and press their lips together, as though testing whether a thought is safe to let out. The unexpected detail: Tavi keeps a tiny, polished wooden whistle tucked inside their collar and plays it expertly, though they claim never to have learned music.
Clothing
A patched brown tunic, a moss-green scarf with frayed ends, and trousers tucked into boots that are one size too large. The sleeves are rolled unevenly, and a cloth pouch tied at the waist holds gathered stems.
Body language
Often stands half a step behind Nera or beside a doorway, shoulders angled toward an exit. Their hands are busy when conversation turns personal, sorting scraps of twine or smoothing a sleeve. When they feel safe, they lean their full weight against a counter and let their feet swing.

Background
Tavi remembers little of their parents beyond a wool blanket that smelled of rain and the habit of listening for footsteps before sleep. After being passed between crowded lodging rooms, they began gathering nettle and tansy at the edge of town for Nera's shop. Nera first paid them in bread and a place to warm their hands, then began showing them how to dry leaves without turning them brittle and how to tell useful tansy from its bitter lookalikes. The change came during a hard frost, when Tavi found a younger street child shivering in a drainage culvert and gave away the shop's only spare blanket. Nera scolded them for risking the stock, then quietly found another blanket. Since then, Tavi has wanted to become someone who can offer shelter without asking permission first. They sleep in the shop's storage loft more often than they admit, wedged between herb sacks and an old shutter. Nera suspects, but has not confronted them. Tavi is also trying to save enough to buy back the little wooden whistle they traded to a peddler for winter shoes, not knowing Nera already found it and hid it in the shop.
Role in the story
A recurring young helper whose knowledge of local plants and quiet observations can guide the party, while their precarious living situation gives the characters a chance to offer help without turning Tavi into a mere quest token.
