At the table

Voice

A well-deep resonance shaped by centuries of speaking in observatories and empty halls. His words carry faint static at their edges, as if the air is trying to remember them.

His voice seems to echo up from a deep well: rounded consonants, a faint watery resonance, and occasional static clicks at the end of a sentence. Long years of speaking to ruins have taught him to leave pauses where other people expect certainty. He does not sing, though he often hums a few notes under his breath.

Speech patterns

Speaks in short fragments, often offering a clear observation followed by an uncertain interpretation.
Uses images of stairs, mirrors, weather, and music when discussing laws or memory.
Sometimes apologizes before answering a question, even when the answer is kind.
Repeats a listener's last few words as though testing whether they still sound true.

How to play them

Treat him with patience, ask specific questions, and compare his claims against physical evidence. Respectful disagreement helps him focus. If the characters show care for someone vulnerable without demanding a reward, he is more likely to risk sharing what he knows.

Goal

Find a trustworthy bearer for the four erased verses before his mind can no longer tell their true wording from imagined versions.

Motivation

To preserve the possibility that laws can change without cruelty, and to make amends for helping create a system that punished dissent.

Appearance

Zephrael is tall and spare, with the long, slightly stooped posture of someone listening through a floor. His opalescent robes shift from pearl to bruised violet with his mood, their hems frayed into papery threads that stir without a breeze. Silver hair floats around his head as if submerged. His mirror-black eyes reflect different scenes: a spiral staircase in one, a depthless void in the other. He smells unmistakably of rain on hot stone and faintly burnt sugar; he seems unaware of it. When he smiles, his teeth are smooth and pale as river glass, and his jaw moves with a soft clicking pause before each bite. The detail that surprises people most is the tiny wooden bird he keeps tucked into his sleeve, carefully repaired with bright red thread.

Clothing

Layered robes of shifting opalescence, frayed like old parchment at the edges, fastened with a plain cord. The inner lining bears faint geometric marks that appear only when light passes through them.

Body language

His head tilts as if listening to a voice through a wall. He reads surfaces with two fingertips, leaving faint static tracings in the air. His hands hover protectively near the broken staff, but he turns his palms outward when trying to reassure someone. He sometimes laughs at a pause in conversation as if a joke has just finished.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Zephrael is gentle with frightened people but evasive with the confident. He longs to be trusted and distrusts his own memories so deeply that kindness can look like a trap to him. When calm, he is patient and unexpectedly practical; when pressed about the erased verses, he becomes precise, then abruptly uncertain. His humor is dry and sometimes arrives several moments after the joke.

Alignment
Compassionate by intention, but too uncertain of his own judgment to fit neatly into a moral category

Quirks

Hums a few notes of Tavrion's tune whenever he approaches a staircase.
Touches walls, books, and cups with two fingertips as if reading their surfaces.
Counts doorways backward, then loses his place and begins again.
Laughs softly at pauses in conversation, as though responding to a joke no one else heard.

Habits

Offers a useful fact alongside a misleading detail, then watches to see which one the listener questions.
When someone is grieving, he stops speaking in riddles and gives practical help without drawing attention to the change.
When a person claims certainty about a moral rule, he asks who the rule has hurt.
After using a powerful ability, he loses track of a familiar name or place for several minutes.

Traits · 3

Offers tenderness readily but accepts comfort with suspicion.
Craves certainty while believing certainty is dangerous.
Can be wry and attentive in ordinary conversation, then abruptly distant when a memory catches him.

Flaws · 3

His memories are unreliable, and he cannot always distinguish recollection from a possible history.
He withholds direct answers when he thinks the truth may harm someone, even when that choice makes matters worse.
He can become absorbed in a reflection or written surface and fail to notice immediate danger.

Fears · 3

That he has already passed on a false version of the four erased verses.
That Tavrion died believing Zephrael betrayed him.
That the laws he helped write will outlast every person they were meant to protect.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs help distinguishing remembered events from possible histories.
Wants someone to carry the verses without turning them into a new unquestionable law.
Needs to know whether Tavrion survived their final disagreement.

Combat

HP 120 · 30 feet; custom Generic Fantasy estimate

Zephrael prefers to delay, misdirect, and create an exit rather than defeat an opponent. He uses Stillness Verse to interrupt a dangerous attack, Borrowed Reflection to shield an ally or conceal a retreat, and Prism Lance only when cornered. He will not pursue a fleeing enemy unless they threaten the prism beneath the Spiral.

Custom Generic Fantasy trait. Prism-sight lets Zephrael perceive traces of erased words and possible histories in reflective surfaces. The visions are clues, not reliable certainty.
Custom Generic Fantasy trait. A nearby lie spoken with deliberate intent makes the prism in his staff flicker, though it cannot reveal which words are false.
Custom Generic Fantasy trait. His celestial nature lets him endure ordinary extremes of weather and need neither food nor sleep, though he sometimes eats out of habit.

Actions

Prism Lance. Custom Generic Fantasy attack. Zephrael thrusts the broken staff and releases a narrow band of refracted force at one target within 30 paces. On a successful attack, it deals 18 damage and leaves a bright afterimage that makes the target's next attack difficult.
Borrowed Reflection. Custom Generic Fantasy power. Zephrael bends light around a point he can see within 40 paces, creating a brief, convincing image or hiding a small area from view for up to a minute. Touching the image or scrutinizing it closely reveals the trick.
Stillness Verse. Custom Generic Fantasy power. Zephrael speaks one of the old laws and arrests motion in a 10-pace area around a point within 30 paces. Creatures there must resist his Resolve or lose their next action. He can use this once before needing a full rest.

Reactions

Refracted Guard. Once per exchange, Zephrael turns the staff's prism toward an incoming attack. The attacker must resist his Resolve or mistake the angle of their strike; the attack is redirected harmlessly aside. This is a custom Generic Fantasy defense.

Services they sell

Interprets old celestial inscriptions, with warnings that his recollections must be checked.
Teaches a character how to recognize traces of erased or altered writing.
Offers cryptic counsel about the cost of enforcing an unchanging rule.

Rewards they can give

A trustworthy party may receive the location of the Spiral's hidden entrance.
If the characters help him verify his memories, he can share a reliable fragment of the erased verses.
His guidance may reveal how a local law or magical binding can be altered without simply destroying it.

Equipment

  • Broken Prism Staff (custom focus)A broken staff topped by a cracked prism that leaks a thread of colored light. Its remaining power supports Zephrael's custom abilities; it is not a standard magical item.
  • Thread-mended bird (keepsake)A tiny wooden bird repaired with red thread. He rubs its worn beak when trying to remember Tavrion's tune.

Possessions

Broken staff topped with a cracked, light-leaking prism
Thread-mended wooden bird
Several blank scraps of parchment that he carries as though they contain writing

Background

Zephrael once helped write the laws that held the upper heavens in order. He believed those laws needed imperfection to remain alive, and argued that a rule without room for mercy would eventually become a weapon. When the other lawkeepers erased four verses that allowed the laws to change, Zephrael helped hide their words in an obsidian dream-prism beneath the Spiral, a stairwell descending through the oldest foundations of the world. The act cost him much of his certainty about memory and truth. He was cast out of the celestial courts and has spent the ages wandering among mortal ruins, offering fragments of counsel to people he rarely sees again. His former counterpart, Tavrion, shared a tune with him; Zephrael still remembers its first notes but cannot recall whether Tavrion survived their final quarrel. These days he shelters in the abandoned observatory above the Spiral's entrance. A local archivist, Sesh, brings him scraps of written history and hopes to earn his trust. Meanwhile, a patient collector called Thessa is searching for the buried prism, believing its verses could restore a vanished city. Zephrael wants to pass the verses on before his mind unravels further, but fears that his memory has begun turning guesses into recollections.

Role in the story

A fallen celestial mentor whose knowledge can unlock a campaign mystery, while his uncertain memory makes truth itself a moral and investigative challenge.
