At the table

Voice

A dry, breath-frayed rasp with a faint scrape at the ends of phrases, as though each sentence has crossed a room full of stone dust. His damaged jaw makes certain consonants click. When calm, he leaves space between thoughts; when shaken, he speaks in short statements and takes one measured breath before continuing.

His voice has a dry rasp from years of dust, pipe smoke, and breathing through damaged ribs. He shapes words carefully around a jaw that catches when he is tired. His pace is steady in ordinary conversation, but when rattled his breath turns shallow and his words arrive in clipped, blunt bursts. He does not lower his voice when angry; he stops cushioning his meaning.

Speech patterns

Tells difficult events in a sequence of practical details, leaving silences where other people expect an explanation.
Uses short questions to test whether someone wants truth or merely a heroic tale.
Names physical sensations precisely: a stair that shivered, a breath that would not come, a stone that moved underfoot.

How to play them

In a tavern, he appears content to be left alone, but answers sincere questions without evasion. He will tell the siege story to anyone who asks directly, watching whether they listen to the names of the dead. Offer practical help without pity and he may accept; call him a hero and he will change the subject. He responds warmly to people who protect someone weaker than themselves.

Goal

Find the gate-keeper who ordered Khar Dast's lower passage sealed and learn whether the order came from cowardice, necessity, or a secret bargain.

Motivation

To discover whether the truth about the gate would heal anyone, or only spread the hurt to people who have already rebuilt their lives.

Appearance

Othresh is a compact, broad-shouldered dwarf whose body is mapped with old wounds: pale ropey cuts over his ribs, a puckered burn down one forearm, and a deep cleft through the left side of his skull where bone and scalp are gone. His left eye is missing; the hollow is covered by a fitted leather patch secured behind his head. His right eye, a dark hazel, stays alert even when his face seems exhausted. Silvery-blond hair, coarse as wire, is braided close on one side and left in a bristling crest on the other. His left leg is missing above the knee. He moves by planting two ashwood forearm crutches with the precise rhythm of a practiced climber, turning in tight spaces with a quick, startling pivot. His hands are scarred and missing several fingers to varying degrees, so he grips his pipe between two knuckles and a leather loop. Unexpectedly for a retired fighter, he keeps a little tin of fragrant violet sweets in his waistcoat and offers them to nervous children. He tends to leave an impression of a shut door with lamplight visible beneath it.

Clothing

A soot-brown travel coat with a high collar, patched at the elbows and open at the shoulder seams for easy crutch use. Beneath it he wears a faded monastery sash, a leather eyepatch, a wool waistcoat with an inside pocket for his flask, and one hard-wearing boot. Nothing is polished; everything is repaired.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders loose and his crutches close, as if they were familiar tools rather than supports. When listening, his thumb circles the pipe's cracked stem. At the mention of Khar Dast, his jaw shifts once against the scar tissue and the fingers of his right hand close around nothing.

Distinguishing features

Missing left leg above the knee and a custom leather-padded socket for his seated brace.
Missing left eye and a chunk of skull, covered by a close-fitted leather patch.
Several fingers missing to varying degrees on both hands; the remaining fingers are crossed with pale scars.
A puckered scar runs beneath his jaw, making it catch slightly when he chews.
Keeps violet sweets in a tin and offers them to children, a surprising gentleness from the infamous siege survivor.

Personality

12 traits and drives

He is candid about pain but evasive about blame, generous with food yet reluctant to accept care. In a quiet room he is patient and dryly funny; when a frightened person is cornered, his humor vanishes and his movements become startlingly direct. He dislikes grand speeches, but will sit through an entire night answering a stranger's questions if they ask without trying to turn him into a legend.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps the pipe stem twice against his lower teeth before answering a difficult question.
Turns his flask so its seam faces away from whoever is sitting opposite him.
Counts doorway steps under his breath, restarting if someone interrupts.
Offers violet sweets to children and to anyone who has just stopped shaking.
When a story reaches its worst moment, he pauses to clean the pipe even if it is already clean.

Habits

Chooses a seat with a wall behind him and a clear view of the door.
When a fight begins, he tries to end it with a warning and a chance to leave; if someone targets a bystander, the warning ends.
Offers his account of the siege plainly when asked, but never volunteers what happened after he reached safety.
Counts the steps to a doorway when entering a room he has not visited before.

Can be tender with strangers and unforgiving with himself.
Is patient with fear but has little patience for people who mistake cruelty for courage.

Treats self-punishment as a form of honesty.
Will not ask for help until a task has become dangerous.
Keeps people at a distance, then resents them for leaving.

Fears · 3

That the people he saved will learn he has been paying for their silence rather than simply helping them.
Being celebrated as a hero for a choice that still feels, to him, unfinished.
Losing the independence his crutches and hard-won balance have given him.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants to know who truly ordered the passage sealed.
Needs to accept that confessing the truth is not the same as asking the dead to forgive him.
Wants the displaced families to have secure homes before winter.

Combat

AC 20 · HP 180 · 25 ft. on level ground using fitted forearm crutches; 0 ft. while prone unless assisted

Avoids prolonged fights and open ground. He uses doorways, tables, and walls to limit an opponent's movement, then targets balance with precise strikes and Open Hand Technique. He favors Stunning Strike against the most dangerous foe and spends ki sparingly. If allies are threatened, he plants his crutches, braces himself, and fights to hold a narrow approach. His missing leg and reliance on crutches make sudden pursuit, difficult terrain, and being knocked prone serious liabilities.

Dwarven Resilience. advantage on saving throws against poison and resistance to poison damage.
Unarmored Defense. AC equals 10 + Dexterity modifier + Wisdom modifier while unarmored and not using a shield.
Martial Arts. unarmed strikes deal damage; he can use Dexterity for attack and damage rolls.
Stunning Strike. when he hits with a melee weapon attack, he can spend 1 ki point to force a Constitution save, , or stun the target until the end of his next turn.
Custom adaptation. Othresh's missing leg prevents ordinary running. With his fitted forearm crutches, he can move at the speed listed below on level ground; uneven ground, stairs, and grapples can sharply limit his mobility.
Custom retirement limitation. though he retains his monk training, he cannot use Flurry of Blows or Step of the Wind while holding both crutches, and his Empty Body technique is inaccessible because he refuses to abandon the people who depend on him.

Actions

Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 () bludgeoning damage. If Othresh has spent at least 1 ki point on his turn, he can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action, provided he has a hand free.
Open Hand Technique. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 9 () bludgeoning damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone. Othresh can spend 1 ki point to use this feature.
Flurry of Blows. Othresh makes two unarmed strikes. He can replace each strike with a shove or grapple attempt. He can use this action only if both hands are free and he has at least 2 ki points remaining; each strike costs 1 ki point.
Stillness of Mind. Othresh can use his action to end one effect on himself that is causing him to be charmed or frightened.
Retired Empty Body. Othresh becomes invisible and gains resistance to all damage except force damage for 1 minute. He can use this action only once per long rest and only if he is not using his crutches. This is a custom restriction reflecting his retirement, not a standard monk rule.

Reactions

Deflect Missiles. When hit by a ranged weapon attack, Othresh can use his reaction to reduce the damage by + his Dexterity modifier. If he reduces the damage to 0, he can catch the missile if it is small enough to hold in one hand and he has a hand free.
Open-Hand Reversal. When a creature within 5 feet misses him with a melee attack, Othresh can spend 1 ki point and use his reaction to make an unarmed strike against that creature.

Background

Othresh was raised among stonecutters in a dwarven road-town, where he learned that a steady hand could keep a tunnel from becoming a tomb. He joined the monastery of the Soot-Sworn Bell after a cave-in killed his older brother and left him convinced that strength without restraint was only another kind of disaster. He became a celebrated instructor, known for teaching miners how to fall, breathe, and get back up. During the siege of Khar Dast, his company was ordered to seal a lower gate with civilians still trapped beyond it. Othresh disobeyed, held the passage while families escaped, and was crushed beneath a collapsing stair. He survived, but lost his left leg, several fingers, and part of his skull. His closest friend and fellow monk, Theska, carried him out. The retreating company later blamed the deaths on Othresh's disobedience, while the rescued families were scattered and silenced. He retired rather than let his monastery turn his survival into a recruiting legend. Now he drifts between roadside taverns, usually taking the darkest corner, and tells his story when asked without asking for pity. He is searching for the surviving gate-keeper who gave the order, while quietly sending money to the families who escaped.

Role in the story

A wounded veteran whose story offers the party a moral puzzle rather than a simple quest. He can provide hard-won knowledge, a connection to displaced survivors, or a reason to investigate the contested history of Khar Dast.

“He became a celebrated instructor, known for teaching miners how to fall, breathe, and get back up.”
From their background
Faction
Formerly of the Soot-Sworn Bell monastery. He has no current formal affiliation.

Known connections

Theska, his former fellow monk, carried him from the siege and now runs a small healing house. They exchange letters, but she has stopped answering his questions about the order to seal the gate.
Khar Dast's displaced families receive anonymous winter money from him. A few know who sends it; none know why he refuses to meet them.
The Soot-Sworn Bell monastery has kept his old practice room empty. Its current abbot wants him to return and tell a version of the siege that makes the order look honorable.
