Kaelen is a hulking, barrel-chested man who looks like a fortress wall in a leather apron. His most striking feature is the absence of a nose; where it once was, a smooth, triangular patch of scar tissue sits between his eyes. His face is a roadmap of the Last War, etched with white scars that stand out against his ruddy skin. He moves with a calculated, heavy-footed grace, the result of decades of military drilling. Contradictory to his grim setting, he always carries a delicate scent of dried lavender and sharp cloves, an olfactory shield against the sulfurous rot of the Black Pit.

Kaelen is professionally morose, treating every customer like a necessary evil. He is deeply protective of the Broken Tusk, viewing the inn as a neutral sanctuary in a village of vultures, yet he won't lift a finger to save a patron unless they have paid the 'protection surcharge.' He exhibits a strange internal tension between his history as a disciplined soldier and his current life as a harborer of criminals. He hates the Black Pit with a visceral passion, yet he refuses to leave, claiming the air everywhere else is 'too thin' for a man with his sins.

A former Sergeant in the Brelish Army, Kaelen's career ended during the Siege of Shadukar. He was ordered to execute a group of warforged non-combatants suspected of carrying a magical contagion. Kaelen refused and led a small mutiny to allow the warforged to flee. During the ensuing skirmish with his own commanding officer, a mace strike shattered his face, removing his nose and half his teeth. He survived only because a comrade hid him in a corpse cart. He fled to the Blackcaps, establishing the Broken Tusk in a ruined siege tower. Now, he uses his military discipline to keep the village's murderers in line while secretly funding the relocation of warforged refugees through the black market.
